Skidmore Drops Field Hockey, 5-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 26, 2008) – Liberty League leading Skidmore got four goals from sophomore forward Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, NY), three of which came in five minute span of the second half, to lead the Thoroughbreds to a 5-0 victory over Vassar in field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field. The loss dampened an otherwise stellar performance by Brewers senior goalie Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central),  who recorded a career high 13 saves in her final home game.

The loss drops Vassar to 4-12, 1-6, while Skidmore improves to 11-3, 6-1. The Brewers will conclude the 2008 season on Wednesday, October 29 with an away game at Scranton. On October 29, Skidmore hosts Hartwick College.

Under significant pressure from the Thoroughbreds in the first half, Herman's nine saves kept the game close. Skidmore unleashed 14 shots, but managed to score only once. At the 3:53 mark, Kemp followed her initial shot that was saved, and poked the rebound ball past the sprawling Herman.

The Brewers had a golden opportunity to tie the game at 1-1 when junior forward Jessica Lance (Enfield, CT/Enfield) saw her shot deflect over Skidmore sophomore goalie Liz Catinella (Sudbury, MA) and ricochet toward an empty goal. A heads up defensive save by sophomore Claire Superak (Carrboro, NC) kept the Brewers from scoring. Skidmore went into intermission leading 1-0, largely due to Herman's save off a penalty shot taken by forward Katie Potter (Rumson, NJ). Her diving save to the right side kept the Brewers within striking distance at intermission.

Kemp, who had 12 shots in the contest, was difficult to contain in the second half. She scored three consecutive goals in just under five minutes, putting the game out of reach. Her first came off a penalty stroke, the second came on a beautifully lifted ball over Herman's left shoulder and the last – assisted by junior Elise Britt (Saratoga Springs, NY) -- came when Herman left the goal to make a slide save and missed, leaving the goal empty for an easy tally.

Sophomore Rachel Horwitz (Beverly Hills, CA/Harvard-Westlake) replaced Herman in goal with 15 minutes left and allowed Britt to score the game's fifth goal in a crowded crease.

The Thoroughbreds controlled play throughout, collecting 13 penalty corners. The Brewers, who went without a penalty corner in the first half, had six in the second half. Seven of Vassar's eight shots came in the final period, with Lance firing off five. Catinella made three second half saves for the Thoroughbreds.
