CANTON, NY (January 26, 2008) -- Vassar's women's basketball suffered through another slugglish first half, falling behind host St. Lawrence 39-18 at intermission, and despite an evenly played second half against the Saints, lost a Liberty League contest this afternoon, 64-43. The loss drops the Brewers to 4-9, 0-5, while St. Lawrence improves to 14-2, 4-1.
Vassar will return to Liberty League play next Friday and Saturday at the Athletics & Fitness Center, with games against Union and Skidmore.
A slow start proved costly for the Brewers, who managed 40 percent shooting from the field in the first half. The second half was a turnaround effort, as Vassar held St. Lawrence to 24.2 percent shooting from the floor and mounted a strong second half surge.
In the first half, St. Lawrence guard Brittany Parham sparked a critical 24-2 Saint run with a shot from three-point range, as the Saints were able to play strong defensively and only allow the Brewers to score once in a 10-minute span to give St. Lawrence a decisive 34-12 lead with 2:47 to go.
Sophomore
Ashley Sherman (Hewlett Harbor, NY) put up two three's for the Brewers in the final two and a half minutes, but a lay-up and a three-point shot from the top of the key by Saint Lawrence's Katie Palmer gave the Saints a 39-18 lead as the period ended.
Vassar came out in the second half and posted an 8-0 run of their own and were able to keep the Saints from scoring until there was 13:39 left in the game, cutting the home team's lead from 21 at the end of the first to 13.
Vassar's second half comeback was anchored by sophomore
Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME) who had 12 points and six rebounds before fouling out with under six minutes to play and the St. Lawrence lead down to 11 points at 49-36. Fellow sophomore
Emma Carmichael (Burlington, VT) continued her strong rebounding with 11 on the afternoon and she added seven points. Sherman chipped in with nine points.
Palmer led the St. Lawrence attack with 18 points. Abby Stanton added 13 points for the Saints who received scoring from nine players.
The Brewers fought hard, especially off the backboard, holding a 35-33 rebounding advantage. Turnovers played a critical role in the outcome, as Vassar committed 22 on the game to St. Lawrence's six.
