MILTON, NY (September 22, 2007) -- Vassar's women's field hockey team scored the games first goal -- on their first shot -- and took a 1-0 lead into intermission, but a strong second half surge by Elizabethtown enabled the visitors to post a 4-1 victory Saturday afternoon at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome.
The Brewers, who played perhaps their finest first half of field hockey this season, fall to 2-7. Elizabethtown improves to 8-3. Vassar returns to action next Friday, October 5, against St. Lawrence at 4:00 pm at SUNY New Paltz. Vassar remains at New Paltz for a Saturday game against Hamilton at 2:00 pm. Elizabethtown faces Gettysburg next Wednesday, October 3.
Vassar's sophomore
Rachel Lowenthal (Bethesda, MD/Walter Johnson) put Vassar ahead 1-0 at the 9:21 mark with the Brewers' one and only shot of the game. Despite being outshot 7-1 in the first half, the Brewers defense was resilient against Elizabethtown pressure. Senior goalie
Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY/The Hackley School) was strong in goal, making three saves.
The second half was a different story. The Blue Jays scored the first of four goals just 1:24 seconds into play when sophomore Caitlin Smith (Haddonfield, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) popped in a goal past Vassar junior second half goalie
Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Herman made four nice second have saves.
That score ignited Elizabethtown's offense. The Blue Jays peppered Herman with 11 second half shots and scored on back-to-back penalty corners within four minutes of one another. Junior Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored the first at 54:03. The second came from junior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep). Both goals were set up nicely by junior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley). Sophomore Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) added an insurance goal for the 4-1 victory, with under seven minutes to play.
Sophomore Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) earned her eighth win in goal, but didn't make a save on the afternoon.
Elizabethtown held an 11-1 edge in penalty corners.
