POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 20, 2007) -- New Paltz capitalized on 31 Vassar turnovers, converting those miscues into 30 points in breaking away from a 30-25 halftime lead to defeat the Brewers 62-47 in women's basketball action Tuesday night at the Athletics & Fitness Center. With the win, New Paltz improves to 2-1, while Vassar falls to 1-2.
Vassar returns to action next Tuesday, November 27, with a road game against Stevens Institute of Technology at 7:00 pm.
The game was close throughout the first half and for the first 12 minutes of the second half. Vassar managed to tie the game 33-33 after a 3-point shot by sophomore guard
Amanda Pesco (Harrison, NY/Harrison) with 17 minutes remaining, but that was the last time Vassar would play even with the Hawks.
With just under 13 minutes left in the second half, Vassar senior guard
Elise Okusami (Olney, MD/Georgetown Day) netted a jumper to cut the New Paltz lead down to two points at 43-41. But after that score, eight Vassar turnovers in the next seven minutes elicited a 12-2 New Paltz run that increased the visitors lead to 55-43.
During this run, New Paltz forward Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) had six points, all coming from 3-point shots.
The games difference was turnovers. The Hawks scored 30 points off 31 Brewers miscues.
Vassar's freshman guard
Carolyn Crampton (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) led the Brewers with 12 points, the second time she has scored in double figures in three games. Sophomore forward
Emma Carmichael (Brattleboro, VT/Brattleboro Union) continued her strong rebounding by grabbing a game high 12 rebounds.
Sohns scored a game high 13 points for New Paltz and grabbed seven rebounds. Guard Kristen Caban (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph Hill Academy) scored 12 points.
In the first half, Vassar kept the game close hitting a 3-pointer that tied the game, 25-25, off a trifecta from sophomore guard
Ashley Sherman (Hewlett Harbor, NY/Lynbrook), who was named the Liberty League co-Guard of the Week following her career-high 27 points against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in the season opener.
New Paltz shot 45 percent from 3-point line, making 9 of 20 shots, a deciding factor in the game's outcome.
