Ashley Sherman (Hewlett Harbor, NY/Lynbrook) scored a career-high 27 points on 7 of 12 shooting from 3-point range in just 19 minutes to lead Vassar's women's basketball team to a resounding 83-57 victory over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in the opening round of the Hampton Inn Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by Mount Aloysius College. The victory marked the first for first year head coach Angel Mason, whose team battled St. Joseph's for the first 14 minutes of the first half before breaking away from a 20-20 tie to build a 41-30 lead. Sherman had 16 of her 27 points in the first half, connecting on 5 of 11 shots from the field and 4 of 9 from 3-point range.
Crampton (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) was equal to the task in her debut, netting 10 points in 20 minutes of action.
The Brewers made St. Joseph's pay for their turnovers, converting miscues for 36 points, 26 alone in the first half. The youthful Vassar team which features just two seniors, got significant contributions from its bench. Sherman scored 27 of Vassar's 45 bench points compared to just six for St. Joseph's. Eight of ten players scored for the Brewers.
Showing no opening game jitters, the Brewers shot 46.4 percent from 3-point distance, and a blistering 53.8 percent in the second half when Vassar gradually put the game out of reach. A key basket came when Okusami (Olney, MD/Georgetown Day) hit a trifecta with 14:41 to play, putting Vassar ahead 52-49. Okusami scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half. She was 4 for 8 from the floor.
Vassar outscored St. Joseph's 42-27 in the second half, holding their opponent between 40 and 50 points for for nearly nine minutes while the Brewers built a 28 point lead.
Sophomore
Emma Carmichael (Brattleboro, VT/Brattleboro Union) led all players with eight rebounds followed by five from Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland. Carmichael added a career-high six assists. Haeuser was 4 for 6 shooting from the field.
