#7 Vassar Tripped Up on the Road at #15 Hobart

Brewers suffer just the second loss of the season

Geneva, NY - The #7 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team suffered just its second loss of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers fell 22-25, 21-25, 25-19, 23-25 on the road to #15 Hobart in conference action. Vassar's record drops to 15-2 on the season and 4-1 in UVC play while the Statesmen improve to 18-15 and 1-3 in conference contests.

First Set
  • Following a 3-3 tie to begin the set on a kill from senior Gavin Akoto, Hobart took a 6-4 lead on winners from Andrew Kim and Aiden Kemora.
  • A solo block from Akoto got the Brewers back within one at 11-10 until the Statesmen increased the lead to 15-12 on two winners from Kim.
  • VC cut the lead down to 17-15 on a block from first year Shawn Zheng and sophomore Armaan Desai before Hobart responded with kills from Noah DeLong and Kim to push the lead to 20-16.
  • Back-to-back kills from senior Tobias Clark reduced the Hobart lead to 22-20 but the Statesmen took the opening set after a kill each from Kim and Kian Kischke.
Second Set
  • After senior Billy Fan's winner to put VC ahead 5-4 early, the Statesmen used three kills from Kim, Kemora and Alain Malcolm to take an 8-6 lead.
  • Vassar battled back to even the set at 11 all on a kill and a solo block from Fan.
  • Hobart's four-point run behind two aces from Kischke and a kill from Lawson Drabik put the Statesmen ahead 15-11.
  • VC got within 22-21 after a kill from sophomore Walter Birnbaum, an ace from Lounsbery and a block from sophomore Enzo Bertini and Akoto.
  • Hobart scored the final three points as a block from Malcolm and Benjamin Lincoln clinched the set victory.
Third Set
  • Kim opened the third set with a kill and two aces along with two more winners from DeLong put Hobart ahead 5-3 early.
  • VC answered to go ahead 9-6 following an ace from Lounsbery and a winner from Akoto.
  • Hobart trimmed the lead down to one at 14-13 before five straight points from the Brewers, led by a kill each from Bertini, Zheng and Fan, put VC ahead 19-13.
  • Back-to-back winners from Daniel Sappia and DeLong cut the lead down to 24-19 before Zheng's winner extended the match to the fourth set.
Fourth Set
  • Following a 3-3 tie to begin the set, VC used two kills apiece from Clark and Lounsbery to go up 7-4.
  • Two winners from Sappia and one from DeLong cut the lead down to 13-12.
  • The Brewers answered with two kills from Fan along with a solo block from Akoto to increase the lead to 19-15.
  • Hobart scored seven of the next eight points behind three kills from DeLong and one from Kim to take a 22-20 lead.
  • Vassar evened the set at 22 all before Hobart earned the set victory on one kill from Sappia and back-to-back winners from Kim.
For The Brewers
  • Fan closed the match with 10 kills and seven digs while Clark registered 10 winners.
  • Bertini added nine kills along with Lounsbery recording six kills, 22 assists, four aces and 10 digs.
  • Akoto, Zheng and Desai all buried five winners each.
  • Senior Nick Villamil handed out 21 assists and lifted eight digs while sophomore Tucker Shearn lifted nine digs.
For The Statesmen
  • Kim recorded a match-high 15 kills along with three aces, five blocks and nine digs while DeLong registered 13 kills.
  • Sappia finished with 11 winners and six digs along with Kischke adding four kills, two aces and two digs.
  • Lincoln handed out a match-high 34 assists while Zack Farren recorded eight assists and five digs.
Up Next
  • Vassar is off until Thursday, March 20 when they travel to Elizabethtown for a 6:00 p.m. match.
  • Hobart will travel to conference foe St. John Fisher on Friday, March 14.
