#9 Men's Volleyball Cruises Past Elizabethtown

Brewers continue the road trip on Saturday against Marymount (VA), Eastern Mennonite

Elizabethtown, PA - The #9 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team returned to the court for the first time in almost two weeks on Thursday evening as the Brewers cruised to a 25-22, 25-13, 25-14 sweep against Elizabethtown on the road in non-conference action. Vassar's record improves to 16-2 overall while the Blue Jays fall to 13-9 on the season.

First Set
  • Both squads traded points in the early stages of the first set as the Blue Jays took a 7-5 lead on a kill from Mason Boyer.
  • Following a double block from Boyer and Cole Burkhardt to put Elizabethtown ahead 9-7, Vassar responded with a 7-2 run behind three kills from sophomore Walter Birnbaum and a winner from senior Payne Lounsbery to go ahead 14-11.
  • Two kills from Braydon Ambruster and one kill from Boyer reduced the lead down to 20-19 before the Brewers answered with a kill from sophomore Armaan Desai and a Birnbaum kill to push ahead 24-19.
  • The Blue Jays would cut the lead down to 24-22 until a service error clinched the opening set victory.
Second Set
  • Vassar raced ahead 6-1 to open the second set as senior Billy Fan recorded a kill, an ace and a block along with senior Tobias Clark burying a winner and Desai tallying two blocks.
  • The lead expanded to 12-3 following two kills from Lounsbery before Elizabethtown cut the lead to 13-6 on a Ambruster kill and a block from Ethan Scott and Burkhardt.
  • Two kills from first year Henry Bonney and one winner from Fan increased Vassar's lead to 17-8.
  • Senior Gavin Akoto recorded two kills along with one winner each from Clark, Birnbaum and junior James Zuckerman to score the second set victory.
Third Set
  • VC started strong to begin the third set as the Brewers took a 5-1 lead on three kills from Birnbaum and a service ace from Fan.
  • Elizabethtown cut the lead to 10-5 on a block from Boyer and Burkhardt until VC kills from Fan, Desai and Birnbaum and an ace from Fan to expand the advantage to 14-6.
  • Two kills from Clark and a winner from Akoto ballooned the Brewers lead to 19-8.
  • Two more winners from Fan along with a kill and a block from first year Stuart Dow propelled Vassar to a three set victory.
For The Brewers
  • Birnbaum finished with a team-high nine kills, four digs and three blocks along with Clark recording eight kills and four digs.
  • Fan added six kills, four aces, five digs and a block while Akoto chipped in four kills and a block.
  • Desai registered three kills, three digs and two blocks along with Lounsbery tallying four kills, 14 assists, an ace and two digs.
  • Senior Nick Villamil handed out a team-high 17 assists while sophomore Tucker Shearn lifted a match-high eight digs.
For The Blue Jays
  • Ambruster registered a match-high 13 kills, five digs and an ace along with Boyer adding 11 kills, three blocks and two digs.
  • Burkhardt finished with two kills and four blocks while Scott recorded a match-high 25 assists and three digs.
  • Dustin Hagin lifted four digs for Elizabethtown.

  • Vassar heads to Marymount (VA) on Saturday for a tri-match with the host Saints and Eastern Mennonite beginning at 12:00 p.m.
