#9 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Marymount (VA) & Eastern Mennonite

Vassar returns to conference action on Wednesday for a big UVC matchup with New Paltz

Poughkeepsie, NY - The #9 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team coasted to two road sweeps on Saturday as the Brewers toppled Marymount (VA) 25-12, 25-17, 25-19 in the first match of the day before completing the sweep with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-23 triumph over Eastern Mennonite. The Brewers improve to 18-2 overall on the season and are in the midst of a three-match win streak.

Vassar 3 - Marymount (VA) 0

First Set
  • Vassar raced out to a 9-1 lead in the opening set as sophomore Armaan Desai registered two kills and a block along with senior Payne Lounsbery and sophomore Walter Birnbaum adding a kill and a block.
  • The Brewers advantage ballooned to 16-5 following two more kills from Birnbaum and a winner from senior Tobias Clark.
  • The Saints drew within 17-9 after a kill and an ace from Mason Moore until VC responded with an ace from Clark, a winner from Birnbaum and a block from Lounsbery and Desai to make it 20-9.
  • Three kills from Birnbaum, one from senior Gavin Akoto and a block from Birnbaum, Akoto and first year Henry Bonney earned the first set victory.
Second Set
  • Marymount took a 5-4 lead after a kill from Ethan Li and a solo block from Moore before a kill each from Akoto and Bonney put VC ahead 8-5.
  • The Saints drew even at nine apiece after an ace from Esteban Jauregui and a kill from Li until the Brewers used an ace from senior Billy Fan and a kill from Desai to push ahead 14-10.
  • Diego Penas winner would get Marymount within 15-12 until kills from Clark, Bonney and Akoto expanded the lead to 19-13.
  • Carter Gresham's ace cut the lead to 21-17 but the Brewers scored the final four points of the set on kills from Fan, junior James Zuckerman, Desai and Clark to clinch the second set win.
Third Set
  • Vassar surged ahead 7-3 on two winners from Clark and an ace and a kill from Lounsbery.
  • A triple block from Lounsbery, Fan and Desai put VC ahead 13-7 until the Saints battled back to get within 14-11 on a kill from Gavin Poe.
  • Two kills from Birnbaum and a block from Akoto and Birnbaum helped VC extend the advantage to 19-12.
  • Marymount would get the lead down to 23-18 on an ace from Jonathan Pickering but VC completed the sweep following two service errors.
For The Brewers
  • Birnbaum buried a match-high 14 kills (.636) and added three blocks along with Clark tallying nine kills (.474) and eight digs.
  • Desai added eight kills and three blocks while Lounsbery registered five kills, 16 assists, three blocks and five digs.
  • Akoto chipped in four kills and three blocks while Fan tallied four winners, three blocks and two digs.
  • Senior Nick Villamil handed out a match-high 18 assists and sophomore Tucker Shearn lifted a match-high 13 digs.
For The Saints
  • Pena finished with five kills and four digs along with Pickering adding five kills and three digs.
  • Jauregui and Li each recorded four kills whule Moore, Seth Richards and Luke Pogue chipped in two winners.
  • Gresham finished with a team-high 15 assists and six digs while Evan Cao added seven assists and three digs.
Vassar 3 - Eastern Mennonite 0

First Set
  • Both squads went back-and-forth to start the set before VC tallied a 10-5 lead following two kills from first year Petar Miocinovic and a block from Zuckerman and Bonney.
  • The Lions drew even at 11 all after two aces from Sebastian Clemente and a winner from Daeman Odom.
  • Following Eastern Mennonite taking a 13-12 lead, VC scored six of the next seven points behind two kills from Miocinovic, a winner from Lounsbery and an ace from Clark.
  • The Lions reduced the lead to 23-19 on a winner from Bennett de Tenley but the Brewers took the set on two service errors.
Second Set
  • VC rattled off five straight points to start the set after two kills from Birnbaum, one from Fan and an ace from Miocinovic.
  • The lead grew to 12-6 after a kill each from Akoto and Zuckerman before EM got within 14-10 on a kill from Ezekiel Awkward.
  • The Brewers used an ace from Villamil, a kill from Fan and a block from Zuckerman and Akoto to go ahead 18-10.
  • First year Stuart Dow and Miocinovic each recorded a kill and a block to clinch the second set victory.
Third Set
  • Eastern Mennonite took a 5-3 lead early before a solo block and a kill from junior Doug Chandler drew the Brewers even at five.
  • Following an Awkward kill, VC used seven straight points, led by three kills from Fan and a winner each frm Dow and Birnbaum to pull ahead 15-9.
  • The lead grew to 19-10 after winners from Chandler and Shearn before the Lions got within 10-14 on two aces from Awkward.
  • Eatstern Mennonite cut the lead down to 24-23 after an ace from Samuel Gomez and a kill from Ricardo Fernandez Perez before a Birnbaum winner gave the Brewers a three-set sweep.
For The Brewers
  • Miocinovic tallied seven kills and nine digs while Fan recorded seven kills and two digs.
  • Birnbaum registered six winners along with Akoto and Zuckerman adding three kills and two blocks each.
  • Chandler, Dow, Lounsbery and Shearn all buried two kills each while sophomore Parker Schoenl handed out 14 assists and lifted eight digs.
  • Junior Casey McMenamin lifted a match-high 11 digs.
For The Lions
  • Andre Mills tallied a team-high six kills, two aces and five digs along with Awkward adding five kills, two aces and five digs.
  • Clemente recorded four kills and two aces while Odom chipped in four winners.
  • Fernando Perez registered two kills, 12 assists and four digs while Jose Melendez tallied two kills.
