#3 Vassar Suffers First Loss at #7 Springfield

Brewers season-opening winning streak ends at 12 matches

Springfield, MA - The #3 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday evening as the Brewers fell 20-25, 17-25, 23-25 on the road against #7 Springfield at Blake Arena. Vassar's record moves to 12-1 overall while the Pride improve to 11-2 on the season.

First Set
  • Springfield opened the match with a 4-0 lead on two aces from Giancarlo Carrion and a kill from Carter Durivage.
  • Vassar trimmed the lead down to 5-4 after a kill and solo block from sophomore Armaan Desai.
  • The Pride expanded the advantage to 12-7 following winners from Chris Rouleau and Durivage.
  • Senior Tobias Clark's kill put the Brewers within three at 15-12 before a block from Rouleau and Jake DesLauriers pushed the lead to 19-13.
  • VC battled back to get within four at 24-20 after two kills from Clark and one from first year Shawn Zheng before Springfield took the set on a service error.
Second Set
  • Following a 4-1 early lead from Springfield, Vassar used an ace from Desai and a block from Zheng and senior Gavin Akoto to draw even at four.
  • A kill from AJ Seveland and a solo block from Rouleau put the Pride ahead 10-6.
  • Durivage's ace grew Springfield's lead to 15-9 as the Brewers got within 19-14 after kills from senior Billy Fan and first year Henry Bonney.
  • Back-to-back blocks from Brennan Cutter and Sam Levinson along with a kill from each clinched the second set victory.
Third Set
  • Vassar held a 6-4 advantage behind three consecutive aces from senior Payne Lounsbery.
  • Springfield took a 8-6 lead following an ace from Levinson before the Brewers regained the lead on kills from Zheng and Akoto along with solo block from Bonney.
  • The Pride went on a run and earned a 15-12 lead following kills from Durivage, Levinson and Dylan Mulvaney.
  • VC surged back ahead 18-16 after an ace from Lounsbery and winners from Bonney, Clark and Akoto.
  • Durivage's kill pushed Springfield back even at 20 and an ace from Will Kirchoff gave the Pride a 23-21 lead.
  • Zheng's winner put the Brewers within one at 24-23 before Durivage buried a kill to complete the sweep.
For The Brewers
  • Clark tallied a team-high six kills and added three digs along with Akoto recording five winners and a block.
  • Fan finished with four winners and five digs while Zheng registered three kills.
  • Lounsbery garnered 13 assists, four aces and three digs while sophomore Tucker Shearn lifted four digs.
For The Pride
  • Durivage finished with a match-high 12 kills and two blocks along with DesLauriers tallied five kills and four digs.
  • Levinson recorded four kills and four blocks along with Rouleau chipping in three kills and three blocks.
  • Mulvaney put together an all-around day with three kills, a match-high 26 assists and two digs.
  • Ricardo Ortiz lifted a match-high 10 digs and Cutter registered three kills and six blocks.
