#7 Vassar Cruises to Sweep Over Nazareth in UVC Action

The Brewers will take on #13 St. John Fisher tomorrow afternoon in the final home game until April

Poughkeepsie, NY - The #7 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team held Nazareth to a hitting percentage of .086 on Friday evening as the Brewers collected a 25-15, 25-23, 25-19 conference sweep over the Golden Flyers at home. Vassar's record improves to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play while Nazareth drops to 10-8 on the season and 1-1 in UVC action.

First Set
  • Vassar took an early 7-3 lead following two kills from first year Shawn Zheng and an ace from senior Tobias Clark.
  • Nazareth got within 10-7 on a winner from Josh Weaver before Vassar expanded the lead to 19-11 after two kills from first year Henry Bonney and a block from sophomore Armaan Desai and Bonney.
  • An ace from Andrew Bodensteiner trimmed the advantage to 19-13 until VC used a kill each from Zheng and Desai along with an ace from senior Billy Dan to push the lead to 22-13.
  • Three straight points from Vassar took the first set as Clark buried a winner and Zheng tallied a solo block for the set victory.
Second Set
  • Both teams traded points early as a Bodensteiner winner put the Golden Flyers ahead 6-5.
  • The Brewers scored six straight points behind a winner each from Clark and Fan along with a service ace from Fan.
  • Nazareth battled back to within two at 15-13 on an ace from Owen Wickens.
  • Bonney's kill put VC ahead 20-17 before three kills from Wickens and one from Ryan Murphy put the Golden Flyers on top 21-20.
  • Two ace from senior Payne Lounsbery helped regain the lead at 23-21 and a block from Desai, Zheng and Clark gave Vassar the second set victory.
Third Set
  • Kills from senior Gavin Akoto and Fan along with a solo block from Bonney gave Vassar a 7-4 advantage.
  • Two kills from Alex Bertino and an ace from Bodensteiner pushed Nazareth ahead 9-8.
  • A surge from VC put the Brewers ahead 18-13 behind a kill and an ace from Desai, a solo block from Akoto and an ace from Clark.
  • Bodensteiner registered two more kills to get within 20-17 until two kills from Zheng and a kill and solo block from Fan completed the sweep.
For The Brewers
  • Desai recorded a team-high seven kills and three blocks along with Clark tallying six kills, three aces and two blocks.
  • Fan registered six winners, two aces and six digs while Zheng garnered six kills, three blocks and two digs.
  • Bonney chipped in five kills and two blocks while Akoto added three winners and a solo block.
  • Lounsbery finished with 10 assists, two aces and five digs along with sophomore Parker Schoenl and senior Nick Villamil handing out nine assists each.
  • Sophomore Tucker Shearn lifted a season-high 14 digs.
For The Golden Flyers
  • Bodensteiner secured seven kills and two aces while Bertino added four kills and six digs.
  • Wickens and Weaver each buried four kills while Max Stuver recorded two kills, 12 assists and 11 digs.
  • AJ Burda handed out 12 assists and Bodey Griff lifted four digs.
