Brewers improve season-opening winning streak to six matches

Poughkeepsie, NY - The #6 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team pushed its winning streak to six straight matches on Saturday as the Brewers took down #19 Nichols 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22 before completing a 25-16, 25-14, 25-18 sweep against Ramapo in the nightcap. Vassar's record improves to 6-0 overall while the Bison move to 3-4 on the season and the Roadrunners drop to 0-3 overall.

First Set
  • The Bison took a 6-4 lead to open the match as Tanner Soracco buried a kill and an ace along with two winners from Adam Vincent.
  • Vassar earned a 9-8 advantage following two kills from sophomore Armaan Desai and a kill each from sophomore Walter Birnbaum and junior Cannon Tucker.
  • Nichols regained the lead at 13-11 after two more winners from Soracco and a block from Vincent.
  • Vassar battled back to earn a 20-17 advantage after two more winners from Desai and a block from Birnbaum, senior Gavin Akoto and first year Shawn Zheng.
  • The Bison got within 22-20 on a Vincent kill before kills from Zheng and Birnbaum took the opening set for the Brewers.
Second Set
  • The Brewers started fast in the second set with a 7-4 advantage as winners from Zheng, Birnbaum and senior Billy Fan pushed VC ahead.
  • The lead grew to 12-8 following winners from Birnbaum and Akoto until Nichols went on a five-point run following two kills from Dylan Knapp to take a 17-15 lead.
  • VC regained the lead at 18-17 on Desai kill before Nichols regained the lead at 24-21 after two more winners from Knapp.
  • Zheng's kill cut the Nichols lead to two on set points but a winner from Bradyn Pomainville evened the match at one set apiece.
Third Set
  • VC raced out to a 7-2 lead behind a winner each from Zheng and Birnbaum along with a block from Fan, Akoto and Zheng.
  • Vassar extended the lead to 13-8 on an Akoto kill before Nichols drew within four on a Pomainville winner at 15-11.
  • The advantage increased to 20-12 on an ace from Fan until the Bison clawed back within 21-15 on a Knapp ace.
  • Vassar surged ahead in the final points as two kills from Zheng and the set clincher from Fan took the third set.
Fourth Set
  • The Brewers collected a 7-1 lead to begin the fourth set as sophomore Parker Schoenl landed an ace along with kills from Birnbaum, Akoto and Zheng.
  • Nichols trimmed the lead down to 13-8 before Vassar's lead grew to 18-10 after Zheng and Desai burying winners along with a solo block from Fan.
  • Following the Brewers taking a 21-13 lead after a kill from senior Payne Lounsbery, Nichols collected five straight points to cut the lead to 21-18 after a kill from Jack Normandin and a Knapp ace.
  • The Bison got within two at 24-22 after a Pomainville winner but a Nichols service error clinched the match victory for Vassar.
For The Brewers
  • Birnbaum registered a career-high 20 kills while Desai finished with a career-best 13 kills and three blocks.
  • Zheng recorded 12 kills and two blocks along with Akoto tallying six kills and two blocks.
  • Fan finished an all-around match with two kills, three aces, four blocks and 12 digs.
  • Schoenl handed out a team-high 25 assists and eight digs while senior Nick Villamil registered 24 assists and six digs.
For The Bison
  • Soracco recorded nine kills and 13 digs while Knapp tallied nine winners, two aces and three digs.
  • Vincent finished with seven kills along with Normandin supplying six kills and seven digs.
  • Pomainville registered six kills, two aces and two blocks while Chandler Olsen handed out a match-high 22 assists.
  • Cade Bernardi lifted eight digs for Nichols.

First Set
  • The Brewers scored 10 of the first 11 points in the opening set, led by two aces from Lounsbery along with three kills from Zheng and two blocks from junior James Zuckerman.
  • Vassar's lead grew to 17-7 after winners from Zuckerman, Tucker and junior Tristan Christofferson.
  • Ramapo cut the advantage down to 24-16 following an ace from Brady Cascone and a kill from Shah Nasher.
  • Christofferson buried two more kills in the final points for Vassar as the Brewers took the first set on a Ramapo service error.
Second Set
  • Vassar held a slim 6-5 lead after a kill from Reece Kirchofer cut the lead to one until VC used an ace from senior Tobias Clark and a kill from junior Eli Lee to push its lead to 9-5.
  • Cascone's kill put the Roadrunners within two at 10-8 before VC scored seven of the next eight points behind two aces form Fan and a kill from first year Stuart Dow to go ahead 17-9.
  • Two aces from Dow pushed the Brewers up 21-11 along with a block from Akoto and Zheng.
  • VC closed the set with kills from Clark, Fan, Lee and Akoto to earn the 25-14 second set win.
Third Set
  • Vassar rolled to a 7-2 lead to start the final set as Clark and Zheng each buried two kills along with an ace from Lounsbery.
  • The Brewers extended the lead to 16-7 after a kill from sophomore Tucker Shearn, Zuckerman and Lee along with aces from Lee and Lounsbery.
  • Ramapo cut the lead to 20-15 on a block from Caleb Ford and JoJo Meyer and got within five once again on a Kirchofer kill at 22-17.
  • Vassar collected three of the final four points as a Lee winner sealed the sweep for the Brewers.
For The Brewers
  • Lee finished with a team-high eight kills and four digs while Zheng added seven winners and two blocks.
  • Zuckerman collected six winners and two rejections along with Christofferson adding five kills.
  • Lounsbery finished the match with two kills, a team-high 15 assists, five aces and two digs.
  • Schoenl handed out 14 assists while Villamil added 10 helpers.
  • Junior Casey McMenamin lifted a team-high six digs.
For The Roadrunners
  • Kirchofer collected a team-best seven kills and five digs while Ford added three winners and two blocks.
  • Cascone and Nasher each recorded three kills while Meyer handed out 16 assists.
