Glenside, PA - The #6 Vassar Colege Men's Volleyball team coasted to its seventh and eighth victories of the season on Saturday as the Brewers swept Hunter 25-18, 25-19, 25-19 before sweeping Arcadia 25-18, 27-25, 25-22 in the nightcap. Vassar's record improves to 8-0 overall, marking the first time in program history that the Brewers have won the first eight games of season.
VC 3 HUNTER 0
First Set
- The Brewers raced out to a 6-2 lead following two kills from junior James Zuckerman and two aces from senior Billy Fan.
- The advantage expanded to 14-8 after a kill from Zuckerman and grew to 17-9 after a kill from first year Shawn Zheng.
- Hunter cut the lead down to 20-17 following a winner from Wesley Stubbs.
- VC answered with five of the next six points and collected the set victory after a block from Zuckerman and senior Tobias Clark.
Second Set
- VC took an early 5-1 lead after two kills from Fan, one winner each from Zheng and Zuckerman and a block from Clark and sophomore Armaan Desai.
- Hunter battled back to take a 10-8 lead on a kill each from Demetri Gournelos and Felipe Delgado and a block from Stubbs and Annes Deljanin.
- A Gournelos winner extended the lead to 14-11 before Vassar tallied six of the next seven points as two aces from Clark and a solo block from Desai to take a 17-15 lead.
- The Hawks drew even at 18 until the Brewers closed the set with seven of the final eight points as Zheng, Fan, Zuckerman and sophomore Walter Birnbaum combined for three blocks.
Third Set
- VC earned a 8-3 lead to start the third set as Fan and Zuckerman each landed aces while Clark buried two kills.
- An ace from junior Tristan Christofferson expanded the lead to 13-6 before Hunter got within one at 16-15 after a kill each from Gournelos and Lucas George.
- Vassar pushed its lead to 21-17 on a Christofferson kill before taking the final set after a kill each from Birnbaum and Fan.
For The Brewers
- Zheng notched eight kills and two blocks while Fan registered seven kills, five aces, four blocks and four digs.
- Zuckerman finished with seven kills, two aces and five blocks along with Birnbaum and Desai each buried three kills.
- Clark added two kills, two aces, three blocks and five digs while Schoenl tallied 17 assists and two digs.
- Sophomore Tucker Shearn lifted a match-high seven digs.
For The Hawks
- Gournelos recorded a match-high 10 kills while Delgado added six kills and six digs.
- Stubbs handed out a team-high 11 assists and five digs while George added two blocks adn two digs.
VC 3 ARCADIA 0
First Set
- Following a kill from Danny Gonzalez to make it 3-3, Vassar scored six straight points behind four kills from Birnbaum, one winner from senior Gavin Akoto and an ace from Fan.
- The advantage grew to 17-7 after a kill each from Birnbaum, Desai and Zheng along with an ace from Schoenl.
- The Knights cut the lead to 18-11 on a Gonzalez kill and an ace from Josh Clendening before VC pushed the lead back to 20-11 on a Fan ace.
- Arcadia got within 21-15 after two more kills from Gonzalez and an ace from Tucker Elicio.
- Vassar took the opening set following a kill apiece from Desai and Zheng and another ace from Schoenl.
Second Set
- Arcadia raced out to an 8-2 lead following three kills from Reece Dodd and an ace from Gonzalez.
- Vassar got within 14-9 on a Zheng winner before the lead expanded to 18-13 on a winner from Elicio.
- The Brewers got back within two at 23-21 after two kills each from Zheng and Fan.
- The Knights got to set point on an Elicio kill before a winner from Fan and an ace from Desai evened the set at 24.
- A service error put Arcadia back on set point before a block from Fan, Akoto and Zheng and back-to-back aces from senior Payne Lounsbery completed the second set comeback.
Third Set
- Arcadia took a 4-2 lead to begin the set before Vassar responded with a kill from Akoto and Fan put the Brewers ahead 6-5.
- After a kill from Zheng to even the set at 11 apiece, Arcadia scored four straight points to go ahead 15-11.
- The Knights advantage grew to 20-16 on a block from Clendening and Dodd before Vassar clawed back within 21-20 on two Zheng kills and a winner each from Fan and Desai.
- Elicio's winner put Arcadia in front 22-20 until the Brewers scored the final five points of the set behind two more aces from Lounsbery and a block from Zuckerman and Akoto.
For The Brewers
- Zheng posted a season-high 14 kills (.565) and two blocks along with Birnbaum tallying 11 kills and 10 digs.
- Fan recorded seven winners, three aces and three digs while Desai collected five kills, two blocks and four digs.
- Akoto added three kills and two blocks along with Schoenl handing out 22 assists, two aces and four digs.
- Lounsbery registered five aces, 11 assists and three digs while Shearn lifted 10 digs.
For The Knights
- Gonzalez notched a team-high 11 kills, two aces and two digs while Elicio added six kills and an ace.
- Dodd finished with five winners while Mike Carr chipped in four kills and two blocks.
- Clendening tallied three kills, two aces, three blocks and six digs along with Riley Kodidek recorded 22 assists, two blocks and nine digs.
- Cameron Birch lifted a team-high tying nine digs.
