#6 Vassar Sweeps SUNY Potsdam in Home Opener

The Brewers will return home tomorrow against Nichols and Ramapo

Poughkeepsie, NY - The #6 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team opened its home schedule on Friday evening as the Brewers completed a 25-21, 25-15, 25-13 sweep over SUNY Potsdam. The Brewers improve to 4-0 overall while the Bears drop to 2-1 on the season.

First Set
  • Following a 4-4 opening to the first set, Vassar used a four-point run led by a kill each from junior Cannon Tucker and sophomore Walter Birnbaum and a triple block from sophomore Armaan Desai, Birnbaum and Tucker.
  • The Brewers lead grew to 12-6 following a kill each from senior Gavin Akoto, Birnbaum, Tucker and senior Billy Fan.
  • Potsdam battled back to get within 19-17 on a winner from Duncan Tenhagan and a block from Matt Kilinski and Christopher Wong.
  • VC ballooned the lead back to 24-19 after two kills from first year Shawn Zheng and an ace from Akoto.
  • Kills from Tenhagan and Charlie Cherchio pushed the Bears within 24-21 before a solo block from Desai clinched the opening set.
Second Set
  • The two teams traded points in the early stages of the second set as a Tenhagen ace evened the set at seven apiece.
  • Back-to-back winners from Akoto and Sheng pushed Vassar ahead 13-9.
  • A big five-point run led by a block from Fan, Desai and first year Henry Bonney and a kill from Fan put VC ahead 20-11.
  • Two kills from Akoto and an ace from sophomore Parker Schoenl gave Vassar the second set victory.
Third Set
  • After the Bears took the first two points, VC scored five straight on two aces from Birnbaum and two kills from Fan.
  • VC quickly extended its lead to 10-3 on two aces from junior James Zuckerman and a kill from Desai.
  • The advantage grew to 21-9 after another Zuckerman ace and a block from Desai and Zheng.
  • A solo block and a winner from Bonney along with a kill from Desai completed the three set sweep.
For The Brewers
  • Fan buried eight kills (.438), two blocks and four digs while Akoto tallied eight kills (.667) and an ace.
  • Birnbaum recorded six kills, two aces and three digs along with Zheng recording five winners and two blocks.
  • Desai collected four kills and five blocks while Schoenl handed out 15 assists and five digs.
  • Senior Nick Villamil added 12 assists and three digs along with sophomore Tucker Shearn lifting a team-high nine digs.
For The Bears
  • Tenhagan registered a match-high 10 kills, two aces and seven digs while Matt Kilinksi added seven kills.
  • Alex Lombardo handed out a match-high 20 assists and six digs while Christopher Wong, Mike Kilinski and Charlie Cherchio each had two kills.

  • Vassar will play host to Nichols and Ramapo tomorrow afternoon at Kenyon Hall beginning at 1:00 p.m.
  • Potsdam heads to Saint Elizabeth tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
