#9 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Monroe College, Sage

Brewers coast to two sweeps in Saturday's tri-match

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The #9 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team returned to action for the first time in two weeks on Saturday as the Brewers coasted to a 25-17, 25-16, 25-21 sweep over Monroe College in an exhibition match before completing a 25-11, 25-14, 25-12 sweep of Russell Sage in the nightcap. Vassar's record improves to 17-5 on the season and senior Jacob Kim recorded his 2000th career assists in the victory over the Gators.

FIRST SET
  • Vassar took an early 5-1 lead as junior Gavin Akoto buried two kills along with a winner from first year Enzo Bertini and an ace from first year Parker Schoenl.
  • Two winners from first year Armaan Desai extended the lead to 12-4 before the Mustangs battled back to 14-9 on a kill from Devounte Bennett.
  • First year Walter Birnbaum registered two kills to push the Brewers advantage to 21-13 before a kill from junior Tobias Clark and another winner from Birnbaum clinched the first set victory.
SECOND SET
  • After Gabriel Stokes' winner tied the set at three for Monroe, Vassar tallied three points from a kill from sophomore Eli Lee and a block from Bertini and Akoto.
  • Back-to-back kills from Desai and a block from Bertini extended the lead to 10-4 before two winners from Arnau Riu Giralt and a kill from Bennett trimmed the lead to 11-7.
  • Vene Gase's kill got the Mustangs within 12-10 before the Brewers scored four of the next five points and went ahead 17-12 on a block from Bertini, Clark and Akoto.
  • Two kills from Bertini and a block and winner from Desai pushed Vassar ahead 21-14 to lead the Brewers to a second set win.
THIRD SET
  • The Mustangs took a 4-3 lead on a winner from Gase before the Brewers used a kill from Birnbaum and aces from Schoenl and Desai to earn a 9-6 lead.
  • Following Vassar taking a 15-10 lead, the Mustangs tied the set at 15 following a kill and block from Gabriel Stokes and two aces from Riu Girault.
  • Monroe took an 18-16 lead after two kills from Briggs Wieboldt and one from Damian Baker before the Brewers evened it at 19 on winners from Bertini and Akoto. 
  • Junior Billy Fan registered two kills along with an ace from Birnbaum to complete the sweep.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Bertini tallied a team-high nine kills and two blocks along with Schoenl recording 18 assists, 11 digs and two aces.
  • Desai finished with seven winners and a block while Birnbaum registered six kills, six digs and an ace.
  • Akoto added five winners and two blocks and Clark tallied two kills and eight digs.
  • Sophomore Casey McMenamin lifted seven digs.
FOR THE MUSTANGS
  • Riu Giralt finished with a match-high 10 kills, two aces and two digs along with Wieboldt, Gase and Bennett adding four kills each.
  • Stokes, Baker and Ethan Grace each added two winners.
  • Timothy Reyes handed out a match-high 25 assists and lifted a team-high nine digs.

FIRST SET
  • Sage tied the set at three apiece on a kill from Dylan Fox before the Brewers scored six straight points, led by a kill each from senior Jacob Kim and junior Payne Lounsbery along with an ace from senior Colin Jones.
  • The Gators got within four at 11-7 before Vassar used two kills from senior Vaughn Ramsey and a winner each from Jones and Fan to push its lead to 17-8.
  • Vassar rolled to a first set victory after aces from Fan and Kim along with three kills from Lounsbery.
SECOND SET
  • Kim's ace along with winners from Ramsey and senior Andrew Guaragno put Vassar ahead 8-5 in the second set.
  • Vassar expanded its lead to 12-7 on two kills and an ace from Guaragno and Ramsey's winner put the Brewers ahead 16-10.
  • Michael Bruyette's kill put the Gators within 19-13 until Vassar scored six of the next seven, led by a kill each from Kim, Jones and Ramsey along with a block from Kim and Jones taking the second set victory.
THIRD SET
  • Vassar earned a 5-2 lead to start the set as Kim led the way with two kills along with one from Lounsbery.
  • Following a kill from Jarod Martel to make it 5-3, the Brewers tallied six straight points with Lounsbery and Ramsey recording kills along with a block from Lounsbery and sophomore Doug Chandler.
  • Sage got within 12-6 after winners from Martel and Wylkins Occelin before the Brewers lead grew to 16-7 after kills from Guaragno, Ramsey and Jones.
  • A service ace from Chandler along with two kills from Ramsey took Vassar to its second sweep of the day.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Lounsbery finished the match hitting a perfect 1.000 on 10 kills along with two blocks along with Ramsey adding nine kills.
  • Kim completed an all-around day with nine kills, 15 assists (including his 2,000th career assist), three aces and three digs while Guarango tallied seven winners.
  • Jones recorded five kills, two aces and two blocks and senior AJ Erickson handed out a team-high 16 assists.
  • First year Tucker Shearn lifted a team-high nine digs.
FOR THE GATORS
  • Martel recorded a team-high seven kills and three digs while Occelin added five winners.
  • Fox chipped in three kills and five digs along with Jack McWilliam handing out 15 assists.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will head to Arcadia next Saturday for a tri-match with Misericordia beginning at 2:00 p.m.
