WALLA WALLA, WA - The Vassar College Baseball team responded following a 19-8 loss in game one of a doubleheader against Whitman on Tuesday to earn a come-from-behind 12-10 victory in game two after a three-run homer from junior
Daniel Laderman in the eighth inning put the Brewers ahead for good. Vassar's record moves to 2-5 on the season while the Blues sit at 6-6 overall.
Game 1 - WHIT 19Â VC 8
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Whitman quickly jumped out to a six run inning in the first as Jack Bickerton and Garrett Runyan each drew walks along with a single from Beck Maguire to load the bases. Brandon Ting's sacrifice fly plated a run followed by Maguire scoring on a wild pitch. AJ Romero singled home Runyan while Nathan Wilson tallied a two RBI single and Bickerton knocked in a run to plate six in the first.
- The Blues added a run in the second as Halen Otte blasted a solo homer before the Brewers got on the board in the third as senior Jaden Milstein beat out an infield single and scored on a triple from sophomore Jensen Bergman.
- Whitman put together another big inning in the third as Bickerton lifted a solo home run to left field followed by a RBI single from Otte and a three-RBI double from Nick Teng.
- The Blues added two more runs in the fourth on a bases loaded hit by pitch by Romero and a bases loaded walk by Teng.
- Vassar loaded the bases in the top of the fifth as junior Marc Milano laced a leadoff single followed by Millstein being hit by a pitch and Bergman beating out an infield single. Junior Ricardo Reyna delivered with a two RBI single up the middle to tally two runs for the Brewers.
- Whitman tacked on three runs in the fifth as Ting plated a run on a sacrifice fly along with Otte chasing home two runs with a double.
- Maguire's two run homer in the sixth added two more runs for the Blues to close the scoring.
- After reaching on an error, junior Finn Kaplan-Moore scored from second base on a wild pitch in the eighth.
- Following a single from junior Birch Herring-Jackson and a hit by pitch of sophomore Taison Jemison in the ninth, first year Noah Stockman blasted his first career collegiate homer over the left field fence to make it 19-7.
- Sophomore Herbert Toler III knocked in the fourth run of the inning on a single to center to score junior Michael Lee.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Bergman finished 3-for-4 with a triple and a RBI while Stockman finished with three RBI.
- Reyna added a hit and two RBI along with Millstein adding a hit and two runs scored.
- Sophomore Danny Wellner took the loss for Vassar as he went one inning, allowing six runs, five hits and four walks.
- Senior Kyle Flynn tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
FOR THE BLUES
- Otte ended the day going 3-for-3 with two extra base hits and knocked in four runs along with Teng reaching base four times and adding four RBI.
- Maguire and Bickerton each tallied three hits, three runs scored and two RBI while Romero, Wilson and Ting each drove in two runs.
- Cole Kreber picked up the win in relief with two innings pitched while giving up one run on two hits and struck out two.
Game 2 - VC 12 WHIT 10
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vassar put two runs up in the first inning as Bergman led off with a double and then stole third. After Lapekas was hit by a pitch and moved to second, Milano collected a two out two RBI single to put the Brewers ahead 2-0.
- The Brewers threw a crooked number on the board in the third as Bergman was hit by a pitch before advancing to third on a single from Herring-Jackson. Lapekas laid down a safety squeeze bunt to score Bergman followed by Herring-Jackson scoring on a fielder's choice. Stockman drove home senior Nick Greenhawt and junior Daniel Laderman on a RBI double off the left center field fence to make it 6-0.
- Bickerton led off the third with a single for the Blues and later scored on a wild pitch for the first run followed by Maguire scoring on a error. Otte, who reached on the error, raced around from first on a base hit from Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping to cut the Vassar lead in half.
- In the fourth, Anthony Ahu-Fisher led off with a single and scored on a triple from Bickerton to bring the Blues within two. Bickerton then scored on a VC error to trim Vassar's lead to 6-5.
- Whitman tied the game at six in the fifth as Nate Korahais doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Teng before scoring on a wild pitch.
- Vassar regained the lead in the sixth as Kaplan-Moore drew a two-out walk and was pushed to third on a Bergman base hit. Kaplan-Moore came across to score on an error to make it 7-6.
- The Blues responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-7 lead as Mieszkowski-Lapping belted a three-run homer with two outs.
- The Brewers rallied for a five run inning in the eighth as Kaplan-Moore reached on a leadoff single before a misplay on a line drive from Herring-Jackson put runners on second and third with one out. Lapekas knocked in a run on a groundout before junior Bradley Markind singled through the left side to tie the game at nine. Laderman then stepped up and launched a homer over the left field fence to give Vassar a 12-9 lead.
- Whitman cut the lead down to two in the ninth as Teng singled home Korahais with no outs before sophomore Cade Terada-Herzer entered with one out and induced two groundouts to pick up the save and the comeback victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Bergman recorded three more hits in game two along with two runs scored and two stolen bases along with Milano adding two hits and two runs batted in.
- Laderman knocked in four runs, including the three-run homer, while Lapekas and Stockman each added two RBI.
- Junior Luke Barrientos earned the win in relief as he tossed four innings, allowing four runs, three hits, a walk and struck out one.Â
- Tereda-Herzer earned the save with 0.2 innings of work.
FOR THE BLUES
- Mieszkowski-Lapping finished with two hits, including a three-run home run, and drove in three runs along with Bickerton, Otte and Teng adding two hits and two runs scored each.
- Rylan Burigsay was strong on the mound in relief as he went 3.1 innings, giving up one run (zero earned), one hit and two walks.
- Russell Peterson took the loss as he threw two innings, allowing five runs (four earned), four hits, one walk and struck out two.
