CANTON, N.Y. - The Vassar College Women's Squash team began its two-day competition at the Liberty League Championships at St. Lawrence on Saturday with three matches against Liberty League foes. The Brewers took a 9-0 loss in the opening match against William Smith, followed by a 7-0 defeat to Denison in the second match and earned a 5-0 victory over Bard in the final match of the night.
In the first match of the day against William Smith, the Herons posted a victory at the top of the ladder as Rafaela Albuja defeated junior
Sehar Dey-Kohli 11-6, 11-4, 11-2 . At two, Marcela Marquez bested freshman
Adriana Ordaya 11-3, 11-5, 11-3. Three saw Anna O'Conner earn victory over rookie
Mariya Novosad 11-3, 11-2, 11-2 followed by four seeing Jada Smith-Padmore defeat sophomore
Sophia Choudhri 11-2, 11-3, 11-2. Five finished with Jessica Finnerty winning 11-2, 11-2, 11-3 over freshman
Charlotte Banigan-White. Six, seven, eight and nine were all wins by default for William Smith.
Against Denison, Maria Clara Ramirez Velasquez won at the top of the ladder over Dey-Kohli 11-3, 11-3, 11- followed by Antoinette Ramsey winning 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 at two. At three, Lane Harding defeated Novosad 11-1, 11-2, 11-1 and Lindsey Cruikshank won 11-3, 11-1, 11-4 at four over Choudhri. Kate Manderlink took a 11-3, 11-1, 11-2 victory over Banigam-White at five. Six through nine were all default victories for Denison.
In the victory over Bard, Dey-Kohli won at the top of the laddder against Pam Jaramillo 4-11, 11-2, 12-10, 11-4 along with Ordaya earned a 11-6, 11-3, 11-4 victory over Jacinta Creel at two. At three, Novosad won 11-3, 11-5, 11-3 against Meherin Hossain followed by Choudhri winning 11-1, 11-4, 11-7 at four over Grace Sanger-Johnson. At five, Banigan-White triumphed 11-4, 11-5, 11-2 over Prootha Patel to round out the day.
Vassar will return to the courts tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. against St. Lawrence for its final match of the Liberty League Championship.
