Vassar Downs Elmira in First Round of UVC Championship

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Junior Andrew Kim led the Vassar men's volleyball team with 18 kills in the 3-1 victory against Elmira in the first round of the UVC Tournament on Friday evening. The Brewers now play St. John Fisher in the semifinals tomorrow at 5 p.m. at New Paltz. Vassar took the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-14, before the Soaring Eagles won 24-26 in the third. Vassar closed out in the fourth with a 25-22 victory.

After a Soaring Eagles service error, junior Adam Gulick knocked in an ace to make it 14-10. Three straight Vassar points that included a kill by Andrew Kim and block assists by Gavin van Beveren, Jacob Kim, and Andrew Kim made it 19-12. Elmira cut the lead to four, but a Soaring Eagles service error gave Vassar a set point.

The Brewers controlled the second set and used a 6-0 run capped off by an Andrew Kim kill to go up 13-7. A kill from Gavin Akoto and another Gulick ace pushed the lead to seven. The Brewers held a comfortable lead, and Vaughn Ramsey sent in the final kill.

In the third, Vassar held a 17-15 lead, but a 3-0 Elmira span kept the set close. A kill by van Beveren and then a double block by van Beveren and Andrew Kim made it 19-18. After six set ties, Payne Lounsbery made it 24-24 after a kill, but the Soaring Eagles scored the final two points.

Elmira took a 4-5 lead early, but the Brewers responded with a 4-0 span comprising three van Beveren block assists. The Soaring Eagles hung around and took an 18-19 advantage before the Brewers rattled off four unanswered points with two Lounsbery kills. Elmira cut the lead to two, but Akoto knocked in a kill for match point.

Andrew Kim hit .394 percent with a team-high nine digs, while Gulick and van Beveren had ten kills. Van Beveren finished the match with nine total blocks. Jacob Kim dished out 43 assists and added eight digs.
