ROME, NY – Despite rainy and cold conditions, it was a solid day on the water for the Vassar men's and women's rowing teams, who competed against Hamilton College, St. Lawrence University, Wellesley College and Smith College on the Erie Canal on Saturday.
On the men's side, the Second Varsity Eight boat took third overall in a time of 7:21.11, trailing Hamilton (7:15.10) and St. Lawrence (7:19.45). Comprising the crew was sophomore coxswain
Jean Fassler, sophomores Nick Winkler and Rafi Ettinger-Finley, rookie Ben Vinson, juniors Lucas Angles and Bela Arwen, sophomore Gage Karlin, junior Joshua Hernandez and sophomore Alex Roth.
In the Varsity Four action on the men's side, the Brewers took second to St. Lawrence, crossing in a time of 8:47.33. Fassler served as coxswain once again, while Winkler, Ettinger-Finley, sophomore Matthew Peeples and rookie Willem Doherty powered the four crew.
For the women, the Varsity Four boat won in a time of 8:39.21, besting boats from Wellesley (9:12.14) and St. Lawrence (9:42.41). Powering the four was rookie coxswain

The women's second varsity eight also had a solid heat, posting a time of 7:55.75. That mark was just behind Smith's A boat time of 7:49.39, but bested Hamilton's crew which recorded a time of 8:32.54.

Both squads are back in action next Saturday, returning to Saratoga Springs to compete at the New York State Championships.
