POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Powered by a solid effort from each end of the ladder, the St. Lawrence University women's squash team won the 2022 Liberty League Championship title on Sunday following a 9-0 win over Vassar College at Kenyon Hall Courts. The Saints, who also posted a 9-0 win over Bard and a 6-3 win against 2020 defending champion, William Smith, post their fourth league title. It is also their first since the 2018-19 season.
This year's Championship Most Outstanding Player honors were awarded to St. Lawrence's Margaret Fleischner, who posted a hard-fought 3-2 (11-8, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9) win in the Saints' critical 6-3 win over William Smith on Saturday.
The first point of the match came at five as Ulrikke Bore Ribesen defeated VC sophomore
Olivia Berkson, 11-4, 11-4, 11-3. At eight, Katherine Leiva gave the Saints the 2-0 lead with an 11-4, 11-1, 11-7 win against rookie
Sophia Choudhri, while at two, Sanna Koivumaki bested Brewers freshman
Emma Adams, 11-2, 11-2, 11-4.
SLU grabbed the 4-0 advantage as Margaret Fleischner recorded an 11-1, 11-4, 11-1 victory against Vassar senior
Darina Kulaha from six. Seven saw Promise Butler notch an 11-3, 11-2, 11-6 win against sophomore
Liv Kane to seal the match victory. From the top of the ladder, Anannya Morey was an 11-2, 11-4, 11-4 winner over Brewers senior captain
Claire Coss.
Next off court was the four pairing as Petra DeRose posted an 11-3, 11-2, 11-6 victory over Vassar senior
Nicole Pihlstrom. Rounding out the action was Makyla Kelley, who defeated Brewers sophomore
Anna Lee, 11-1, 11-6, 12-10 to end the match. The Saints won the ninth spot on the ladder by default.
