POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Junior Andrew Kim (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) led the No. 2 Vassar men's volleyball team with 12 kills to lead the Brewers to a 3-0 sweep of the Violets on Friday evening. It is now Vassar's ninth sweep of the season as the Brewers move to 10-1 and 4-0 in the UVC. Meanwhile, NYU slips to 7-5 and 3-1 in the conference.
NYU took a 5-6 lead following a service ace from Owen Wahlgren in a tight first set. Junior Adam Gulick (Buffalo, NY) sent in a kill to tie, but the Violets responded with a kill by Ryan Whealen and then one from Gautham Dasari. Vassar rattled off a 3-0 run comprised of two Kim kills and a double block by Kim and Gavin van Beveren (Alpharetta, GA). The set remained close, and NYU took an 11-12 lead after a Vassar error. The Brewers then went on a 6-0 run with two Gulick aces to go up 17-12.
NYU fought back to make it 23-23 after a James Haag kill. Gulick knocked in a kill to make it 24-23, and then sophomore Colin Jones (San Diego, CA) blocked a Dasari attack to give Vassar a set-point.
Vassar jumped out to an 8-5 lead following a Jacob Kim (Pleasanton, CA) service ace. Kellogg sent in a kill to keep it a two-point contest, but a kill from van Beveren and an Andrew Kim ace made it 10-6. The Brewers kept building their lead and kills by first-year Payne Lounsbery (Long Beach, CA), and Kim put Vassar ahead 22-16. NYU was able to cut the lead to 23-19, but Jones and Kim but the final two kills in.
The third set stayed close until midway through. A Vassar service error put the score at 16-12, and then the Brewers went on a 6-1 run capped off with another Jacob Kim ace to take a 22-13 lead. A Violets point broke the streak, but Vassar scored the final three to take the sweep.
Andrew Kim hit 12-of-25 (.320 percent) and had one ace, three digs, and two block assists. Gulick added nine kills on .400, hitting two aces and three digs. Van Beveren recorded a strong hitting day at .626 with seven kills and no errors. Jacob Kim led the Brewers with 33 assists and also tallied five digs. Matt Usui (Rolling Hills Estate, CA) led the team with six digs.
James Hagg had ten kills with three digs for the Violets, while Dasari tacked on six kills.
Vassar is back tomorrow to face No. 1 Springfield and Illinois Tech in a tri-match starting at 1 p.m. at Kenyon Hall. Â
