Women's Squash Sweeps Seven Sisters Rivals

Brewers post 7-2 win over Smith & 5-4 victory against Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, MA - Powered by outstanding efforts from each end of the ladder, the Vassar College women's squash team posted victories over Seven Sisters-rivals Smith College and Mount Holyoke College at the Kendall Sports and Dance Complex on Saturday afternoon. Vassar defeated the Pioneers by a 7-2 margin in the opener, followed by a nail-bitting 5-4 win against the host Lyons in the final match of the day. The Brewers move to 9-6 on the season.

Against the Pioneers, senior Claire Coss posted a 3-0 (11-7, 11-3, 11-3) win over Betsy Hillier at the top of the ladder. Two saw rookie Emma Adams notch a 3-0 (11-3, 11-6, 11-6) victory against Naimah John-Charles, while from three, sophomore Anna Lee was a 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-4) win versus Amrita Archaya. At four, senior Nicole Pihlstrom was a 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-3) winner against Gwen Gignac, while five saw sophomore Olivia Berkson best Kaia Cormier, 3-0 (11-8, 11-2, 11-2).

Six saw a tough loss for senior Darina Kulaha as she fell to Zoe Kruse by a 3-2 (8-11, 3-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6) margin. Seven was a victory for sophomore Liv Kane as she took down Grace Hartley, 3-0 (11-1, 11-4, 11-1), while at eight, rookie Sophia Choudhri was a 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-3) victor against Adelaide Esseln. The Pioneers earned the win at nine by default.

In the final match of the day against Mount Holyoke, the Brewers powered their way to victory as Adams defeated Xaria Durocher at two by a 3-2 (11-8, 13-15, 11-9, 6-11, 9-11) margin. Lee took down Giselle Cabrera at three by a 3-0 (11-2, 11-5, 12-10) score, while four saw Pihlstrom post a 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-8) victory over Melissa Marquez. At six, Kulaha bested Elena Frogameni by a 3-1 (5-11, 11-8, 16-14, 11-7) margin. The Brewers suffered a loss at seven as Kane fell 3-0 (11-5, 11-9, 11-8) to Paige Gershuny, while at eight, Choudhri dropped a hard-fought 3-2 (3-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9) decision to Dnyaneshwari Haware. Due to the ninth match being a win by default for the Lyons, the match was tied 4-4 going into the final pairing.

Berkson played the victor for the Brewers against Kyla Core at five, taking down the Mount Holyoke player by a 3-0 (16-14, 11-2, 11-2) margin for the 5-4 match victory.

Vassar returns to action next weekend when it heads to Cambridge to compete at the 2022 CSA Women's Team National Championships. The event, which runs Friday through Sunday, will be held at Harvard University and Tufts University.
