Women's Squash Sweeps Action in Season Opener

Brewers defeat Fordham, Boston University and Northeastern

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar women's squash team kicked-off its 2022-23 season on Saturday in fine fashion, sweeping action at Kenyon Squash Courts. The Brewers defeated Fordham, 8-1, followed by a 9-0 win over Boston University with a 7-2 victory against Northeastern University to close out the day.

In the opener against Fordham, the Vassar women had an outstanding effort, nearly sweeping the Rams with an 8-1 score. From the first position on the ladder, rookie Luna Kang notched an 11-1, 11-1, 11-0 win over Fordham's Abagail Hobika, while sophomore Emma Adams won from two with an 11-4, 11-1, 11-4 victory over Liliana Kinnan.

Three saw junior captain Anna Lee notch an 11-4, 11-4, 11-3 victory over Lauren Page, while from four, rookie Adriana Ordaya was an 11-2, 11-0, 11-6 winner over Tayler Rogers. Junior captain Olivia Berkson had an 11-3, 11-4, 11-4 win over Julia Khankan from five, while rookie Mariya Novosad was an 11-2, 11-4, 11-1 victory over Claudia Schneider.

Seven saw sophomore Sophia Choudhri battle back for a 9-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-1 win over Barera Ajaz, while from eight, the Rams picked up their lone win as Annika Bonwetsch was a 11-5, 11-9, 5-11, 11-1 winner over Vassar junior Kelsey O'Connell. Rounding out the efforts from nine was rookie Chloe Vaiman, who bested Fordham's Eva O'Toole by an 11-6, 12-10, 11-9 score.

In the days middle match against Boston University, Berkson led off the match with an 11-9, 11-6, 11-6 win over Arya Tumuluri at five. From nine, Vaiman was a 3-1 (11-8, 5-11, 11-6, 11-5) winner over Gina Carpenter, while from two, Adams battled to a 9-11, 11-4, 14-12, 11-9 victory over Krishna Patel.

From six, Novosad was an 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 victory over Tanisha Rungta, while from eight, O'Connell earned a hard-fought 10-12, 11-4, 11-13, 11-7, 11-4 win against Samaa Rasheed. Next up from four, Ordaya was an 11-3, 11-5, 11-5 winner against Gaby Kuntz.

Next up from three, Lee dropped in a 14-12, 11-4, 12-14, 11-5 victory against Charlotte Galusza, while from seven, Choudhri was an 11-5, 11-4, 10-12, 11-2 winner over Tanmayi Rayavaram. Rounding out the action was Kang, who posted a 13-11, 6-11, 11-5, 11-4 victory against Mahek Hemani from the top of the ladder.

In the final match of the day, the Brewers went up against the Huskies as Berkson posted another victory with a 12-10, 11-8, 11-6 win over Karina Peak from five. From nine, Vaiman won by default, while Adams was an 11-6, 11-8, 11-6 winner against Emily O'Brien from two.

Six saw another win for Novosad, who defeated Nitya Shah by an 11-2, 11-5, 11-6 score. O'Connell suffered a tough 9-11, 11-13, 6-11 loss to Sonia Whitman from eight, while at four, Ordaya was the winner with an 11-8, 11-8, 11-4 margin against Gisselle Rojas.

Three saw Lee with another win, dropping in an 11-7, 11-7, 11-8 score over Caroline Beecher. Seven saw Choudhri fell to Jayrene Rodriguez, 1-11, 4-11, 9-11. Kang picked up her third win of the day, posting an 11-5, 11-6, 11-4 win against Sabrina Gribbel from one.

Vassar returns to action on November 19 when the Brewers host Connecticut College and Haverford College at Kenyon Courts at 11am and 3pm, respectively.
