Women's Fencing Finishes Runner-Up at Matt Lampell Invite

Brewers go 6-1 on the day

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Vassar College Women's Fencing team took home the second place trophy at the Matt Lampell Invite at Walker Field House. The Brewers finished their day at 6-1 overall and improved to 9-5 overall on the season. 

Vassar suffered its only loss in the opening round at 12-15 to Drew as junior Hunter Grogan earned two victories for the foil squad. Freshman Sarah Boucher-Rowe and sophomore Addy Xie each picked up two wins for epee while freshman Abigail Geiger led the foil squad with two victories.

The Brewers bounced back with two straight wins over Bryn Mawr (21-6) and RIT (20-7). Grogan went a perfect 6-0 at foil for Vassar while Nicole Ezell added four bout victories. Sabre went a perfect 9-0 against Bryn Mawr and added seven wins over RIT, led by Geiger's perfect 6-0 mark. Xie earned three victories against RIT while freshmen Alisha Arden and Aanya Mukherjee added four wins apeiece against the two foes for the epee squad.

Vassar earned another victory in round four, defeating RPI 24-3. Geiger earned three more victories for the sabre squad while Poniatowski added two wins. Grogan, Ezell and senior Sophie Jones all went 3-0 to lead foil to an undefeated record. Boucher-Rowe and Mukherjee went undefeated at epee while Arden added two bout victories.

The Brewers took home a 20-7 win in round five as epee went 8-1, led by three victories from Boucher-Rowe and Xie. Geiger remained undefeated at sabre with three victories while Poniatowski added two. Grogan earned three more wins for Vassar in foil while Jones picked up two victories.

Vassar then defeated CCNY 20-7 as epee went 9-0 with senior Carter Mucha, Mukherjee and Hirsch all getting 3-0 marks. Poniatowski earned three wins at foil while Mark added two victories as Grogan won three wins along with Ezell. Vassar earned its sixth victory of the day against Yeshiva as foil took a 9-0 victory while Geiger completed their day with three victories at sabre and Arden and Hirsch went undefeated in epee.

The Brewers return to action on December 4th for the Tradition Invite hosted by Sacred Heart with a start time of 10:00 a.m.
