Men's Soccer Falls in Penalty Shootout Against #8 Bowdoin

Polar Bears and Brewers tie, 1-1; Bowdoin posts 4-1 shootout win to advance

Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Vassar College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against eighth-ranked Bowdoin College, but fell by a 4-1 margin in a penalty kick shootout in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday at Pickard Field. The Polar Bears advance to the Round of 16 next weekend and are 12-1-5 on the season. Vassar concludes its outstanding season with a 9-3-7 mark.

After a nearly scoreless first half of action – which saw several solid chances by the Brewers – it was the homestanding Polar Bears that got on the board first with less than 13 minutes to play. Gaining possession in the Vassar zone, rookie midfielder Mateo Pacelli carried it in on the right side, dropping a shot in that was saved by senior keeper Eric Wnorowski at the right post.

The ball ricocheted out and, at full speed, was drilled into the net by a speeding Carlton Steinberg for the 1-0 Bowdoin advantage in the 31st minute.

Vassar had an outstanding opportunity in the 42nd minute as sophomore midfielder Derek Sando corralled the ball on the right side of the box, firing in a shot that was quickly scooped up Bowdoin senior goalie Michael Webber to keep the Brewers off the scoreboard heading into halftime.

Second half action saw the action pick up as the rain continued to pound down on Pickard Field. The Brewers opened the action right off the bat as senior midfielder Kinlay Watkins dropped in a shot that was saved by Webber just a minute into the half.

A header from senior midfielder Ryan Lane went just wide minutes later and his ensuing shot in the 50th minute was saved by Webber to keep it a 1-0 score. Rookie midfielder Tyler Huck nearly gave Bowdoin a 2-0 lead as he fired in a shot in the 60th minute, followed a few minutes later by a shot from Bae Minseo that was punched out by Wnorowski.

Another flurry by the Polar Bears saw Huck fire in a shot that was quickly saved by Wnorowski in the 68th minute, followed by a header save off a Julian Juantorena shot off a corner kick.

The Brewers turned the tide in the 77th minute as a foul in the box at the far post on Bowdoin gave Vassar a penalty kick opportunity. Stepping up for the attempt was Keker, who drove it into the right side past Webber for the equalizer.

Bowdoin nearly made it a 2-1 advantage in the 88th minute as rookie forward Felipe Rueda Duran's header in the middle of the box clipped just wide by the left post as the teams remained locked in a 1-1 score heading into the first overtime.

Action was a back-and-forth affair to open the first extra session. Vassar had a solid attempt in the 93rd minute as Keker headed the ball in toward Webber as it caromed just wide of the left post. Bowdoin also had a strong opportunity in the 97th minute as junior midfielder Harry Cooper took advantage of a good angle, dropping a shot over the defense, but Wnorowski was there for the stop.

Second overtime action saw a quick cover by Wnoroski as the Bowdoin offense screamed into the box on a 2-on-1, but the senior keeper covered it to keep the score locked at 1-1. Despite a Vassar corner attempt, neither team were able to generate the game-winner as action shifted to a penalty kick shootout.

In the shootout action, Bowdoin stepped up first with senior defender Dylan Reid sending one past Wnorowski for the 1-0 lead. Brewers sophomore defender Julian Funaro then evened the score, firing a shot past Webber for the 1-1 margin.

Cooper was up next for the Polar Bears, sending his shot in, while Webber countered on the next Vassar attempt, making the save on sophomore defender Charlie Rodhouse's shot. Bowdoin sophomore midfielder Ronaldo Cabral made his attempt for a 3-1 lead. Vassar then sent sophomore forward Jackson Hall to the line, whose shot was stopped by Webber. The Polar Bears then saw Huck make his shot to send Bowdoin to the Sweet Sixteen.

For the game, Bowdoin posted a 17-12 margin in shots, including a 9-6 edge on goal. Vassar owned the advantage in corners by a 7-5 mark.

In goal, Wnorowski made eight saves for the Brewers, while Webber stopped five shots for the Polar Bears.
