POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Vassar College men's and women's squash teams hit the court on Saturday afternoon at Kenyon Hall, taking on Hamilton College in Senior Day for the Brewers teams. Both teams suffered 9-0 losses to the Continentals. The men's squad – ranked #37 in the CSA Rankings - is now 5-6 overall, while the women – ranked #30 in the CSA - moved to 6-4.
Prior to the match, the Brewers honored their Class of 2022 seniors which included Reese Collins, Liam Condon, Henry Mitchell, Max Swan, Alex Wisneski,
Claire Coss,
Darina Kulaha and
Nicole Pihlstrom.
In the men's match, from the top of the ladder, Rithik Jalali shouldered a tough 11-4, 11-4, 11-9 loss to Hamilton's Tate Suratt. From two, Sameer Mustafa suffered an 11-9, 11-6, 11-3 defeat against Waleed Nisar. From three, Mitchell fell to Rufus Somerby, 11-6, 11-5, 11-5, while at four, Patrick Looby dropped an 11-5, 11-6, 11-1 decision to Nicholas Carabatsos.
Five saw Max Swan fall to Tate Burgin, 11-7, 11-8, 11-3, while from six, Alex Wisneski suffered an 11-3, 11-6, 11-1 loss to Tripp Peters. At seven, Jarid Haslinger fell 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 to Blake Davis. The eighth spot on the ladder saw Collins fall to Oliver Constable, despite a hard-fought 11-8 win in the opening game. He later fell 8-11, 11-1, 11-5, 11-8. Finally from nine, Josh Finkelstein fell by an 11-3, 11-6, 11-3 margin at nine.
On the women's side, the #30 Brewers saw Coss fall at the top of the ladder to Sarah Stonestreet, 11-5, 11-8, 11-6. At two,
Emma Adams suffered an 11-3, 11-4, 11-3 loss to Eliana Good, while at three,
Anna Lee shouldered an 11-4, 11-6, 11-9 loss to Eleanor Bailey.
Four saw Pihlstrom fall 11-3, 11-8, 11-5 to Madison Sakheim, while at five,
Olivia Berkson dropped an 11-3, 11-5, 11-6 decision to Zoe Reinert. At six,
Liv Kane suffered an 11-2, 11-3, 11-2 loss to Eleanor Struthers, while at seven, Kulaha fell 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 to Sydney Holloway. Rounding out the efforts at eight was
Sophia Choudhri, who fell 11-1, 11-4, 11-2 to Eliza Glass.
Both teams return to action next weekend when Vassar hosts the 2022 Liberty League Round Robin. Vassar faces Hobart and William Smith at 9am on Saturday at Kenyon Courts. The Brewers will face Bard at noon, followed by the Vassar men against the Rochester men at 5pm. Sunday's action will see the Brewers host St. Lawrence at Kenyon Courts at 10am.
