POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Junior Avery Bauman (Westbrook, CT) netted the game-winning goal at 4:13 in the fourth quarter to give the No. 18 Vassar field hockey team 1-0 victory against Marywood on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Betty Richey Tournament. The Brewers now move to 2-0, while the Pacers are 0-1.
Early on, the Brewers were unable to find many open shots against the Pacers' defense. Vassar made a few attempts, and first-year Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) hit on goal, but Marywood's Rachel Yohn deflected the ball away. Senior Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) made a late attempt with under 20 seconds, but again Yohn was there for the stop.
The second and third quarters were evenly matched, but Vassar had an 8-7 shot advantage. The Pacers nearly scored following a pair of corners at 8:06. The Brewers dug in, though, with goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) blocking two straight shots, and then sophomore Heidi Compton (Clark, NJ) and McGrath made the defensive saves off the rebound attempts.
Vassar did not allow a single Marywood shot in the fourth and turned up its offense by taking seven shots. Bauman nearly scored at 5:42, but Yohn just got enough to turn the ball away. Following a wide shot from McGrath, the Brewers stole the ball near the Marywood net. The ball found its way to Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) at the inside middle of the circle. Bauman took the pass and then redirected it into the right corner of the Marywood goal.
The Brewers' defense held in the final minutes and did not allow the Pacers out of the midfield. With the win, Dumaresq earns her first-career shutout and recorded a season-high five saves.
Vassar plays Stevens on Sun. Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. at Weinburg Field for the second game of the Betty Richey Tournament.
