POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – It was another sweep for the Vassar College women's squash team as the Brewers posted a 7-2 win against Boston University, followed by a 5-4 victory over Colgate University in action at Kenyon Courts on Sunday. The Brewers move to 4-0 on the season with this weekend's effort – which included wins against Fordham University and Northeastern University on Saturday.
In the opening match against the Terriers, senior captain
Claire Coss posted a 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-4) win from the top of the ladder. Two saw sophomore
Anna Lee record a 3-0 (11-0, 11-4, 11-4) win over Rose Zhao, while three saw senior
Nicole Pihlstrom earn a 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-3) victory against Arabella Valcourt.
At four, sophomore
Claire Weiss had a strong (3-0 (11-1, 11-8, 11-7) win against Gaby Kuntz, while classmate
Olivia Berkson was a 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-1) winner at five over Chloe Garton. Senior
Melina Stavropoulos won a hard-fought 3-1 (11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 11-4) victory against Sasha Malhotra at eight, while rookie
Sophia Choudhri cruised to a 3-0 (11-0, 11-0, 11-0) win.
The Brewers two losses in the match were still hard-fought, including a 3-2 (11-6, 6-11, 3-11, 11-9, 11-8) loss for senior Darina Hulaha at seven.
Vassar's second match of the day was a tale of the ladder as the Brewers took the second, third, fourth and fifth position wins, while the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth were Colgate victories. Lee was the Brewers victor at two, defeating Betsy Figge, 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-1). Pihlstrom bested Sarah van Dyke, 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-4) at three, while Weiss was the victor at four over Campbell Mecke, 3-0 (11-5, 11-2, 11-4).
Berkson was the Brewers winner at five, defeating Samantha Gerstein, 3-0 (11-3, 13-11, 11-6) as the match was tied at 4-all. It all came down to Coss for the victory at the top of the ladder as the senior powered her way to a 3-0 (11-5, 12-10, 11-7) win to seal the match.
Vassar returns to the courts next Sunday (11/14) when it hosts William Smith College on Kenyon Courts at 12pm.
