POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – It was an outstanding start to the 2021-22 season for the Vassar women's squash team, which posted a 9-0 win over Fordham University, followed by a 5-4 win against Northeastern University to open the day. The Brewers are now 2-0 to open their campaign.
In the morning opener against the Rams, it was a clean sheet from top to bottom. From one, senior captain
Claire Coss was a 3-0 (11-2, 11-3, 11-3) winner over Gabriella Amaturo. Sophomore
Anna Lee recorded a 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-1) win against Lauren Page at two, while junior
Nicole Pihlstrom earned a 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-2) victory over Abagail Hobika.
Sophomore
Claire Weiss then posted a 3-0 (11-4, 11-1, 11-2) win against Tayler Rogers at four, while classmate
Olivia Berkson defeated Sydney Wilson, 3-0 (11-2, 11-1, 11-4). At six, sophomore
Liv Kane defeated Anita Bui, 3-0 (11-8, 14-12, 11-9).
Seven saw senior
Darina Kulaha post a 3-0 (11-9, 11-5, 11-5) win against Claudia Schneider, while at eight, senior
Melina Stavropoulos bested Julia Khankan, 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-5). Rounding out the efforts was freshman
Sophia Choudhri, who gutted out a 3-2 (11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-6) win against Liliana Kinnan.
The afternoon match against the Huskies was a bit tighter, but still had a number of outstanding efforts. Coss picked up her second win of the season, defeating Sabrina Gribbel at one by a 3-2 (11-4, 12-14, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9) margin.
Lee recorded her second win as well, defeating Belkis Montas, 3-0 (11-8, 11-3, 11-5), while Pihlstrom was a winner as well with a 3-0 (11-4, 12-10, 11-6) win against Leah Swope from three. Weiss picked up her second victory of 2021-22, besting Emily O'Brien, 3-0 (11-7, 11-3, 11-4).
Berkson was victorious from five, defeating Julia Beck, 3-0 (11-2, 11-3, 11-6) to round out the victories for the Brewers.
Vassar is right back in action on Sunday at Kenyon Courts, opening at 10:30am against Boston University. The Brewers will then face Colgate University at 1:30pm to wrap up the weekend.
