Endicott Bests Vassar in NCAA First Round

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar field hockey team's season ended Wednesday evening when they fell 2-1 to Endicott in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Gulls' Jenna Seibold scored the opening goal seven minutes in, and then Meaghan Hogan scored in the fourth to seal the game away.

At the start of the first, senior Carina D'souza (Mountain Top, PA) took the opening shot that Endicott goalkeeper Taylor Farrin saved. Junior Ella Pearl collected the rebounds attempt, but it sailed wide right. Hogan responded with an Endicott shot that Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) turned aside. The ball bounced to Seibold, who chipped the shot into the back of the net.

Vassar could not find any clear looks, and the Gulls' defense swarmed any corner shot attempts. At 24:43, Endicott drew a penalty stroke. Abby Carter lined up and shot high and left, but Dumaresq read it well and deflected the ball. Then soon after, sophomore, Adah Anderson (San Diego, CA) read a penalty corner shot to make a defesnive save. At the end of the third quarter, Vassar answered with their penalty stroke from Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA). Farrin held in, though, making the save and keeping the Brewers off the board.

Endicott pushed their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Blake Braman dished off to Hogan at the top right of the circle. Hogan shot, and the ball bounced high off the defender and just over the goalkeeper to reach the back of the net.

Vassar tried to make a comeback and scored late in the game. Senior Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) shot from the right just inside the circle, and first-year Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) redirected the ball into the left post to make it 2-1 with under two minutes remaining. Endicott took possession at the end and was able to let time run out.

Farrin finished the game with seven saves, while Dumaresq had two. Vassar held a slight 11-10 shot advantage, but Endicott went up 9-6 in corners.

The Gulls now travel to face Middlebury on Saturday in the second round.
