D'souza's Game Winner Gives Brewers Senior Day Victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The visiting St. Lawrence Saints play spoiler to Vassar's senior day, but the Brewers held on for the 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field. Senior Carina D'souza (Mountain Top, PA) netted the game-winning goal just 54 seconds in the first overtime period to move Vassar to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League. Meanwhile, St. Lawrence falls to 7-5 and 1-2 in the conference.

The Saints came out of the gates hot, scoring within the first minute of play. A miscue by the Vassar defense turned the ball over, and St. Lawrence's Mckenzie Haberl broke away with the ball. With only the goalkeeper to beat, she chipped the shot in to make it 1-0.

Following the goal, the Brewers outshot the Saints 10-1, scored two unanswered goals in the first quarter, and did not allow another St. Lawrence shot attempt until the fourth. The opening Vassar goal came 50 seconds later when the Saints goalkeeper deflected a ball to Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY). The first year then chipped the ball in from the right side of the net to tie it 1-1 at 13:04.

Vassar maintained the pressure in the St. Lawrence zone and scored again at 10:59. D'souza inserted the ball from the corner to Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) at the top of the circle. Brigger fired the shot into the back of the net to put the score 2-1.

Action cooled off a little the next two quarters with the Brewers only shooting three times. At 9:33, Brigger attempted goal, and then Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) redirected the ball to push the Brewers' lead to 3-1. Then in the fourth, the Saint slowly started to come back. St. Lawrence made it a one-score game following a scramble in front of the Vassar goal. After Heidi Compton (Clark, NJ) made a defensive save, the Saints scored off the rebound.

St. Lawrence tied the game 3-3 after Haberl snuck in another deflection goal at 4:25, forcing overtime.

The extra period ended quickly with D'souza scoring on the first Vassar possession. D'souza collected the ball on the left side of the goal and, after a spin move, flicked the ball in to win the game.

Vassar outshot St. Lawrence 19-5 and held a 10-4 corner advantage.

The Brewers are back home to host Ithaca on Fri. Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. on Weinberg Field.
