Brewers Drop League Contest to Bombers

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The visiting Ithaca Bombers scored a late fourth-quarter goal to secure a 1-0 victory over the Vassar field hockey team on Friday evening. Vassar slips to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League with the loss. Meanwhile, Ithaca leads the conference at 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Vassar took only one shot in the first quarter. Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) fired a shot down the middle off a Carina D'souza (Mountain Top, PA) penalty corner, but Ithaca goalkeeper Macy Brandwein made the save.

Ithaca went on the offensive in the second, outshooting Vassar 5-2. The Bombers had a few goal attempts, but goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq held in to make two stops. A pair of Vassar penalty corners late in the half led to two shot attempts by Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA), but the goalkeeper stopped them both.

In the third quarter, the game remained scoreless, and the Brewers' defense prevented any Bombers' shot attempts. Then in the fourth, Ithaca nearly scored three minutes in when Jacqueline Mirabile shot following a penalty corner. The ball went past the goalkeeper, but luckily Sarah Ryan (Swampscott, MA) turned it away for a defensive save.

The Bombers eventually scored at the 56th minute when Grace Ziehnert collected a rebound and found the back of the net. Vassar was unable to get any chances after that as Ithaca held on for the win.

Vassar is back in action on Sun. Oct. 17 when they travel to face Union at 1 p.m.
