Vassar Falls to New Paltz in Overtime Shootout

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Vassar field hockey team dropped a 1-2 overtime decision to New Paltz in the regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers lost 1-3 in the shootout to lose their third straight and move to 11-6 overall. Meanwhile, New Paltz finishes the season at 14-2.

After a scoreless first half, Vassar got on the board first at the 33rd minute. Senior Heidi Zahnleuter (Clifton Park, NY) had a shot saved at 33:02, but the Brewers drew a penalty corner right after. Senior Carina D'souza (Mountain Top, PA) inserted, and the ball made its way to Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA), who passed off. Zahnlueter collected the ball and chipped in the score to make it 1-0.

The lead was short-lived as the Hawks responded four minutes on their penalty corner. Jessica Ascencao passed off the insertion to Natasia Plunkett, who found the open net. Vassar added two corners in the final minute of the fourth but could not score, and overtime was needed.

Leilani Llamas (Grapevine, TX) and Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) rattled off two shots at the start of overtime, but Hawks' goalkeeper Ryan Dowling saved both. Molly Zahnleuter (Clifton Park, NY) kept the game tied by picking up a defensive save following a New Paltz corner shot. Vassar had another early chance to score when Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) made a shot on frame that was turned aside.

In the shootout, Vassar missed on the first attempt as the Hawks scored on their second. Kate Neikirk (Hayes, VA) evened the score 1-1, but New Paltz scored on their last two attempts to earn the victory.

Vassar now moves to the postseason on Wed. Nov. 3 when they host St. Lawrence in the Liberty League Semifinals at 4 p.m. on Weinberg Field.
