Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Vassar Powers Past Union 6-0

Schenectady, N.Y. – The Vassar field hockey team bounced back with an impressive 6-0 win over Union Sunday afternoon. The Brewers controlled the pace early, rarely allowing the Dutchwomen out of their arc for most of the game. With the win, Vassar moves to 10-3 and 3-2 in the Liberty League. Union falls to 5-8 and 1-4 in the conference.

Union attacked early in the first, but that proved to be the best chance they had. Senior Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) made the defensive save on an Emma Davis shot attempt following a corner. Then goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) stopped the next deflection shot.

Afterward, Vassar wasted no time getting on the board, scoring in three minutes. Senior Carina D'souza tapped in a shot from Katie Hieb (Berkeley, CA) to net her first-career goal. The Brewers continued to keep the pressure up, rattling off 12 shots in the first quarter. Hieb then scored at 12:06 when she collected her rebound and fired into the back post.

Senior Carina D'souza (Mountain Top, PA) scored five minutes into the second period to make it 3-0. D'souza shot from the top of the arc, and the ball went over the goalkeeper for the score. That proved to be the only shot taken by either side for the remainder of the half.

After halftime, the Brewers netted another early period goal from first-year Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY), who chipped in the ball from the top of the arc. Vassar managed one more shot from McGrath, but again the defense held the Dutchwomen without an attempt.

The Brewers capped off the day with two more goals in the fourth quarter. First-year Leilani Llamas (Grapevine, TX) fired from the top of the arc off a corner to push the lead to 5-0. Then sophomore Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA) beat the Union defense inside and swept a shot for the Brewers' sixth goal.

Vassar finished the game outshooting Union 24-6 and held an 18-2 corner advantage.

Vassar continues Liberty League play with a tough road contest against Rochester on Fri. Oct. 22 at 4 p.m.
