COSTA MESA, CA – A doubles sweep and solid singles action helped lift the Vassar College men's tennis team to a 7-2 win over Hardin-Simmons University in the opening match of their California trip on Sunday. The Brewers move to 6-2 on the season, while the Cowboys are now 4-5 overall.
Doubles action saw three outstanding matches, anchored in the second flight by a close win from juniors
David Gandham and
Adam Krueger. The Brewers duo posted an 8-7 (7-4) victory over Josh Lopez and Desmond O'Shea.
From the first flight, seniors
Jeremy Auh and
Allen Sokolov bested Holt Fields and Nathaniel Schoendorf, 8-4, while at three, junior
Nicolas Demaria and sophomore
William Hwang battled to an 8-5 win against Davyn Williford and Dia Ndumbe.
In singles action, Sokolov earned a 6-3, 6-1 win against Lopez at three, while sophomore
Mihajlo Ivanovic was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Keenan Nash at five. Demaria posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Williford at six, while Krueger was a 6-1, 6-3 victor over Fields at two.
The Brewers also saw tough battles at one as Schoendorf and Gandham squared-off. After winning the opening game, Gandham shouldered a tough loss in the second. Schoendorf grabbed the overall win in the tiebreaker, posting a 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) victory. From four, Auh shouldered a tough 5-7, 3-6 loss to O'Shea.
Vassar is back in action on Thursday when it heads to Whittier College to face the Poets at 4pm (PT).
