Women's Squash Splits in Day 1 Action at Liberty Leagues

Brewers post 9-0 win over Bard; Fall to William Smith in game 2

ROCHESTER, NY - Day one of action at the 2020 Liberty League Squash Championships is in the books and the Vassar College women's squash team posted a 1-1 overall record. The Brewers bested Bard by a 9-0 margin, but later fell to William Smith, 9-0. The Brewers are now 6-13 overall following the day's action.

Against Bard, the Brewers opened with the quick 1-0 lead after a win by default from the ninth spot. Next up was Lucie Bisbee, who won at eight with a 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-5) victory over Cameron Orr. Vassar jumped out to a 3-0 lead following a win by Samantha Henderson from the fourth spot as she defeated Nadia Russell, 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-1).

Claire Coss then made it a 4-0 advantage from the top of the ladder, winning 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-4) over Pam Jaramillo. The Brewers pushed it to a 5-0 margin with a win from five as Amanda Watson took down Jackie Lerman, 3-0 (11-6, 11-1, 11-6), while from seven, Odie Berkson was the winner as she cruised to victory over Siren Chen, 3-0 (11-1, 11-3, 11-1). 

From two, senior Sydney Nemphos was a 3-0 (11-5, 11-7,11-2) winner against Riti Bahl to make it a 7-0 advantage, while at three, Nicole Pihlstrom earned a 3-1 (7-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-4) win against Cerina Shippey.

The match wrapped up from six as Alexa Elias picked up the victory as she posted a 3-2 (5-11, 11-4, 11-2, 9-11, 11-5) win over Marlaina Yost.

In the second match of the day against the Herons, Coss shouldered a tough loss to M. Marquez Martinez at the top of the ladder, followed by a 3-0 loss by Caitlin Lewis at nine against Aye Bah. Eight saw Bisbee shoulder a tough one to Gretchen Vietor, while Henderson fell to Djeneba Ballo, 3-0.

Watson then fell at five to Erin Griffis by a 3-1 margin, battling back in the second game to tie, but ultimately falling, while from two, Nemphos battled but fell to Gabby Fraser. Seven saw Berkson suffer a 3-0 loss to Karina Lazaro and then Pihlstrom fell to Molly Wachter, 3-0 at three. The match concluded at six as Elias suffered a 3-0 loss to Maia Dreishpoon.

The Brewers return to action on Sunday for day two of action at the Liberty League Championships. VC will face St. Lawrence University at 12pm as action shifts to the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
