Ninth-Inning Rally Gives Vassar Split at RPI

TROY, NY – Trailing 4-2 after six innings, the Vassar College baseball team scored a run in each of the final three games to notch a 5-4 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at RPI on Sunday afternoon.  The teams split the twinbill, as the Engineers (11-11, 7-5 Liberty) defeated the Brewers (11-13, 5-7 Liberty) 2-0 in the opener at Robison Field.

Vassar took an early 2-0 lead in game two, as Sam Brinster (Long Beach, NY) came across on a wild pitch in the first and Gunnar Wildercrantz (Selden, NY) drew a bases loaded walk in the second.  However, RPI tied it with two in the third before Freddy Reichelt's two-run double in the fourth put the Engineers in front 4-2.

In the top of the seventh, the Brewers loaded the bases with two out for pinch hitter Jason Salerno (Dix Hills, NY), who knocked in a run on a fielder's choice.  Vassar then picked up an unearned tally in the eighth to tie the game.  With runners on first and third, Matt Martino (Hauppauge, NY) was caught stealing second.  Connor Levchuck (Greenlawn, NY) broke for home on the play and beat the throw, knotting the score at 4-4.

Daniel Bonfiglio (New York, NY) led off the ninth inning with an infield single, but was quickly erased on a double play.  Robert Pinataro (Binghamton, NY) was up next, and he ripped a double to right center.  Salerno followed with a single to left center that gave Vassar a 5-4 lead.  RPI put the tying run on third in the bottom of the ninth before Joe Conti (Bloomingburg, NY) slammed the door to secure the split.

Martino had three of the Brewers' 13 hits in the contest, while Tanner Blough (Carlsbad, CA) and Bryan Rubin (Bryn Mawr, PA) recorded two hits apiece.  Starting pitcher Mitchell Mullock (Moorestown, NJ) allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits, struck out three and walked one in 4.1 innings before giving way to Alex Hartnett (Miami, FL), who surrendered two hits and tallied three hits in 2.2 innings.  Patrick Fitzgerald (Phoenix, MD) (2-2) earned the win after pitching a scoreless eighth, and Conti was credited with his second save of the year.

For the Engineers, Jack Vaccari finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Austin Lawrence was 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Reichelt, meanwhile, collected a pair of RBIs on his fourth-inning double.  Patrick McMackin got the start on the mound and went one inning.  He yielded two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked two.  Six RPI relievers followed, with Mike Tagaris (2-2) taking the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) and four hits in two innings.

Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when RPI notched the only two runs of the contest.  After a leadoff double by Jack Moncour and a Richard Drum walk, the Engineers got on the board when Cole Paquin grounded to third.  RPI then picked up another run when Vassar pitcher Matt McGannon (Redding, CT) balked with the bases loaded.

That proved to be enough offense for Ryan Yerby, who tossed a seven-hit shutout.  The Brewers had their opportunities, but left eight runners on base in the contest.  Yerby (3-1) retired the side in order in the seventh to complete the 99-pitch, four-strikeout effort.

Pinataro and Taylor Smach (Manlius, NY) each had two of Vassar's seven hits.  McGannon (2-2) lasted four innings on the mound and took the loss.  He was charged with two runs, three hits and three walks while striking out three.  Jake Silver (Wellington, FL) relieved him and gave up one hit to go with a pair of strikeouts in two innings of work.

On Wednesday, the Brewers return home for a 4 p.m. matchup with Williams (13-4) at Prentiss Field.
