POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – On Wednesday afternoon, the Vassar College baseball team welcomed Williams to Prentiss Field for a non-conference tilt. After the Ephs scored four early runs, the Brewers (11-14) rallied within 4-2 before Williams (14-4) pulled away for an 8-2 victory.
Williams took advantage of two Vassar errors to plate a pair of unearned tallies in the top of the first. The Ephs added two more in the second before the Brewers got one back on an RBI single by
Matt Martino (Hauppauge, NY) in the bottom of the third. Vassar trimmed its deficit to 4-2 on
Jason Salerno's (Dix Hills, NY) RBI single in the fifth, but Williams scored three times in the eighth and picked up another run in the ninth to round out the scoring.
That was more than enough offense for Williams starting pitcher George Carroll, who shut the Brewers down over eight innings. Carroll (1-0) held Vassar to a pair of runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out five and walking one. Nehemiah Wilson tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for the Ephs.
Kellen Hatheway paced Williams offensively with three hits, and Mike Stamas scored two runs. Eric Pappas, meanwhile, finished 1-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.
For the Brewers, Salerno ended up 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while
Taylor Smach (Manlius, NY) was also 2-for-4.
Zach Magee (Indianapolis, IN) (0-1) started on the mound for Vassar took the loss. He surrendered four runs (two earned) on four hits, struck out one and walked three over 3.1 innings. Four Brewer relievers followed, with
Jake Silver (Wellington, FL) recording three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
Vassar (5-7 Liberty) resumes its Liberty League schedule with a four-game set against Skidmore (11-9, 2-6 Liberty) this weekend. The Brewers will visit the Thoroughbreds for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before the series shifts to Prentiss Field for a 12 p.m. twinbill on Sunday.
