GENEVA, N.Y. – The Vassar men's tennis team hit the road for their final match of the regular season. It was the home Statesmen pulling out the win though, defeating Vassar 7-2 on Saturday morning.
Hobart swept the doubles courts, winning 8-0 in the first court against
Allen Sokolov (Woodland Hills, CA) and
Jeremy Auh (Scottsdale, AZ). The Statesmen continued their run, besting the duo of
Mathew Yee (Sha Tin, Hong Hong) and
Nicolas Demaria (New Hyde Park, NY) 8-4 at the second.
David Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) and
Adam Krueger (Bay Village, OH) were defeated 8-3 at the No.3.
The Statesmen won the first four courts without dropping a set. Gandham fell by marks of 6-1, 6-3, while Yee lost 6-2, 6-2 at the second court.
Jamie Anderson (Constantine, KY) had a closer match at the No. 3, but was bested 6-4, 6-3. Krueger lost 6-3, 6-4 at the fourth court. Vassar picked up its two wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots; both going three sets. Sokolov played the sixth position and fell 6-1 in the first set. He bounced back, winning the next 6-1. He then won 6-3 in the tie-breaker set. Auh won in a similar fashion. He fell 6-4 in the first and rallied for the close 7-6 second set victory. He closed the day edging his opponent 11-9 in the final.
Vassar still qualified for the Liberty League Tournament next weekend. Championship starts on May 3 at Ithaca, NY.
