Ros Swings Strong in Two Straight Wins

ROCHESTER, NY- Vassar College men's volleyball player, Kevin Ros (Bridgewater, NJ) lead his team with 30 kills on the day and two straight wins on the road defeating Nazareth College in five sets (23-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-9, 15-7) and Mount St. Joseph University in three sets (28-26, 25-16, 25-22), Saturday afternoon.

Additionally, Ros amassed three blocks, two assists and six digs.

George Diehl ( St. Louis, MO)  and Jefferson Waters (Hummelstown, PA) secured 20 and 16 kills respectively on the day. While Daniel Halberg passed 45 assists (Newark, DE) and Matt Usui collected 23 digs.

The day opened slow for the Vassar dropping the first two sets to United Conference for, Nazareth. Despite the close scores, after the first two sets, the Brewers were hitting 0.100 on the day. Though, Vassar stepped it up in the third set hitting .682, with 16 kills and just one error.

The third set opened with the Brewers going on a swift 6-1 run, which included kills from Ryan Duchemin (Maitland, FL), Waters and Matt Usui (Rolling Hills Estates, CA). Two attacking errors and a kill from Ros (Bridgewater, NJ), and Vassar found themselves with a 7-point advantage and the clear lead. Though, the Golden Flyers put up a sizable defense and offense and worked to close that gap. However, the Brewers went on a tear scoring four straight points off another Waters kill and a Waters service ace, a Nazareth attacking error and a kill from Halberg . The early deficit was too much for the Golden Flyers to come back from and the Brewers closed out the set with a Ros kill.

With one win and fighting to stay alive and win the match, the Brewer's offensive spirit lingered strong opening the fourth set with a 7-0 run. At the line Halberg served seven balls, including two service aces. In an effort to break Vassar's offensive push, Nazareth took a timeout. Post timeout, the Golden Flyers got scored their first point of the set. The Brewers responded to that with another 4-point run consisting of a Waters from Halberg kill, a Duchemin kill and two Golden Flyers errors. Leading 11-2, Vassar's offensive onslaught continued to dominate, winning the set.

The fifth and final set of this match faired similar to the second two for the Brewers. Although a closer battle on the court, with the Golden Flyers coming within 2-points to the Brewers, Vassar held composure and ended the match with five consecutive points.

After a long first match, the Brewers had to re-strategize as they took on non-conference adversary Mount St. Joseph.

The first set opened with the Brewer's aggressive at the net taking the lead. Though the Lions were equally as aggressive. The score deadlocked five times before Vassar found it's edge. The scoreboard set at 10, Vassar went for three points at the helm of George Diehl (St. Louis, MO), connecting with three kills. The Lions did not let this deter them, though, as they worked hard on and off the net to secure the lead. The two teams found themselves tied at 21. Two Vassar errors and a service ace, and the Brewers trailed for the first time in the match. Though, two Mount. St. Joseph errors and a kill from Joe Hendrickson (Feeding Hills, MA) leveled the set at 24. The Brewers and Lions both within 2 points of winning, continued to trade points until a St. Joseph error followed by a Ros kill ended the set in Vassar's favor.

Vassar's aggression at the net and fierce defense remained in the next to sets.

Set two started with Vassar up 8-5. Four kills from Ros off of Hendrickson and Noah Hoppenjans (Edmond, OK), three Mount St.Joseph errors and two Hendrickson service aces gave Vassar another nine-point leverage, bringing the score to 17-5. From there, the Brewers promptly ended the set with another Ros kill.

The final set of the day commenced with the Brewers trailing 6-8. Yet, two errors on the Lion's offense and the game was tied. Vassar and Mount St. Joseph exchanged points until the Lions went on a 4-1 point run and tied the score at 19. A Lion kill combined with a Brewer error and Mount St. Joseph had the lead. Still the Brewers kept swinging and went on a 6-1 point lead containing a Diehl kill, two Waters kills, two service aces and the win.

With the set of wins, the Brewers move to a record of 11-7 overall and 3-3 in conference.

The Brewers continue their road trip and are back on the court Friday, Mar. 22 in Arlington, VA as they face Stevenson University at 1 p.m. and Marymount University at 3 p.m.
