MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. – The Vassar women's squash advanced to the CSA Team National Finals following wins against Bard and Colgate. The Brewers had a clean sweep over Bard in the quarterfinals and won 6-3 over Colgate in the semifinals.
Against Bard, Vassar swept every position 3-0. No. 1
Sydney Nemphos (Baltimore, MD) won by marks of 11-3, 11-4 and 11-2, while No. 2 Coss (Penn Valley, PA) went 11-2, 11-9 and 11-6. At the third,
Julia Pollak (San Francisco, CA) defeated Renad Bdair at 11-3, 11-3 and 11-5. No. 4
Amanda Watson (Falmoth, ME) cruised past Riti Bahl 11-4, 11-4 and 11-2.
No. 5
Alexa Elias (New York, NY) won 3-0. She defeated Jackie Lerman 11-4, 11-5 and 11-2. No. 6
Allegra von Hirschberg tallied a sweep against Justine Zaki, and
Isabel Bronson (Monterey, MA) rolled 11-3, 11-3 and 11-4 at the seventh spot. No. 8
Nicole Pihlstrom (Fort Collins, CO) won her match with a sweep of Eva Grunblatt. Natlia Lanzoni (Cambridge, MA) won 3-0 at the ninth position at 11-3, 11-8 and 11-4.
The Brewers had a closer match against Colgate, but won 6-3. Nemphos fell in three sets to Freesia Ferrantino at the first. Coss had a five-set battle against Cristina Johnson. After dropping the first two sets 11-7 and 11-9, Coss fought hard for three-straight wins at 11-5, 11-6 and 11-5. Pollak swept Amanda Gastel in three sets, while Watson won 3-1 against Ann Childress.
Alexa Elias (New York, NY) fell 3-1 at the fifth position. Von Hirshberg, Bronson and Pihlstrom recorded 3-0 wins from the sixth to eighth spots.
Natalia Lanzoni (Cambridge, MA) fell 3-0 in the ninth position.
The Brewers now face either Bowdoin or Washington University in St. Louis in the finals. That match will be played at 12:30 p.m. at the Wesleyan Squash Courts.
