POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - An outstanding effort full of tight matches and solid efforts helped propel Vassar College to victories over Northeastern University and Boston University on Sunday. The Brewers earned a 5-4 over the Huskies, followed by a 9-0 win over the Terriers. VC moves to 4-0 on the young season.
Sophomore
Claire Coss (Penn Valley, PA) was among the first wins for the Brewers on Sunday morning against Northeastern, earning a 3-2 victory over Linda Manziaris from the top of the ladder. After shouldering a loss in the opening game, she battled back to win the next two matches for the 2-1 lead. Manziaris won game four to set up a fifth and decisive game, but Coss prevailed, gutting out a 13-11 win for the final match score of 5-11, 11-4, 11-8, 7-11, 13-11.
From two, freshman
Claire Weiss (Philadelphia, PA) was a 3-1 victor against Isabelle Quarrier. After the two traded games, Weiss brought on the momentum with wins in the third and fourth for the 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 11-4 victory. The three position saw senior
Sydney Nemphos (Baltimore, MD) earn the win over Sabrina Gribbel, allowing just one game win enroute to the 3-1 victory by a score of 11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7.
From four, senior
Alessandra Pilkington (New York, NY) was the victor over Maggie Markgraf, earning a 3-1 win. She battled back from a first game loss to earn a 9-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-6 win. Five saw Sophie Langlois get the best of Vassar sophomore
Nicole Pihlstrom (Fort Collins, CO) as she won 3-0 (4-11, 4-11, 1-11), while at six, Molly Blair gave the Huskies another victory against junior
Isabel Bronson (Monterey, MA), gutting out a 3-2 (4-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-8, 9-11) win.
The Brewers battled back from seven as senior
Samantha Henderson ( Mbabane, Swaziland) won a gruelling match against Belkis Montas. Holding a 2-1 advantage, she shouldered a tough loss in the fourth before battling back for the win in five by an 11-9, 5-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6 margin.
Ny Ho gave Northeastern its third win, earning a 3-1 (11-9, 6-11, 4-11, 5-11) win over freshman
Odie Berkson (Providence, RI), while from nine, the Huskies garnered their final point as Jennifer Jin defeated sophomore
Lucie Bisbee (New York, NY), 3-0 (2-11, 3-11, 4-11).
The second match of the day against Boston University once again saw Coss earn victory at the top of the ladder over Normandie Essig by a 3-0 margin (11-7, 11-6, 11-3). Nemphos then jumped up a spot for match two, earning a 3-0 win over Rose Zhao (11-3, 11-4, 11-3).
From three, Pilkington was the victor over Arabella Valcourt, 3-0 (11-4, 11-2, 11-7), while four saw Pihlstrom bounce back for a 3-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-9) win against Meghana Patnana. Bronson earned a 3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-4) victory over Gaby Kuntz at five, while Henderson captured a 3-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-3) win over Elan Aiache Reynaud at six. The final match saw Berkson grab a 3-0 (11-7, 11-2, 11-4) victory against Chloe Garton.
Vassar returns to action next Saturday at it competes in the Colgate Round Robin. The Brewers will take on Bucknell University at 1:45pm, followed by a 4:30pm match against the host Raiders later that day.
