POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Vassar College women's squash team shouldered a pair of tough losses on Saturday, falling by a 7-2 margin to both Connecticut College and Haverford College at the Kenyon Hall courts. The Brewers are now 4-5 on the season.
Connecticut College opened with a 2-0 advantage in the match as senior Mikayla Waterhouse (Scarsdale, NY) bested freshman
Odie Berkson (Providence, RI), 3-0 (11-6, 11-0, 11-3) at eight, while from five, sophomore Johanile Hurtado (New Haven, CT) was a 3-0 (11-2, 11-3, 11-4) victor over sophomore
Nicole Pihlstrom (Fort Collins, CO).
Vassar battled back from the top of the ladder as sophomore
Claire Coss (Penn Valley, PA) posted a 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-7) win against senior Margaret Davey (Groton, MA). Despite the momentum, the Brewers shouldered a loss from nine as freshman Leslie Gonzalez (New York, NY) defeated sophomore
Lucie Bisbee (New York, NY), 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-4).
The Camels grabbed a 4-1 advantage from six after sophomore Lili Vazquez (Chicago, IL) defeated junior
Isabel Bronson (Monterey, MA) by a 3-0 (11-8, 11-2, 11-4) margin. Match point came from the second spot as junior Molly Carabatsos (North Andover, MA) earned a 3-1 (11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 11-2) victory against Vassar freshman
Claire Weiss (Philadelphia, PA).
At seven, sophomore Birgitta Salvesen-Quinn (Cambridge, MA) made it a 6-1 advantage after posting a 3-0 (11-3, 11-6, 11-6) win over senior
Samantha Henderson (Mbabane, Swaziland). Vassar battled back at four after senior
Alessandra Pilkington (New York, NY) defeated senior Davis Lemay (Harwich Port, MA), 3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-9).
Action concluded with the three's as Camels junior Denise Bonilla (New Haven, CT) and senior
Sydney Nemphos (Baltimore, MD) battled it out. Despite the second and third games being tough rallies, Bonilla came away with the 3-0 (11-4, 12-10, 12-10) victory.
Match two of the afternoon saw the Brewers take on the Fords and earn success from the third and fourth spots on the ladder. Pilkington picked up her second win of the day from four, earning a hard-fought 3-2 (17-15, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9) win against Sunyoung Chai. Vassar's other win came from Nemphos, who took on Shreya Singh and prevailed by a 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-6) margin at three. From the first position, Coss shouldered a tough loss as Kaitlin Reese earned a 3-2 (10-12, 7-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-9) win.
Vassar saw a couple of other hard fought matches on the day, including at five as Pihlstrom suffered a 3-1 (4-11, 11-7, 6-11, 10-12) loss to Urgyen Wangmo, while at seven, Henderson also fell by a 3-1 (10-12, 11-9, 6-11, 5-11) margin to Maisie Smith.
Vassar's women's squad is now idle until December 7 when it takes on Wesleyan (9am) and Bates (1pm) at the Wesleyan Round Robin in Middletown, CT.
