Women's Volleyball Shoulders Tough Loss at Skidmore

Brewers fall to Thoroughbreds in Liberty League action

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (October 26, 2019) - The Vassar women's volleyball team shouldered a tough league loss at Skidmore on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-23). The Thoroughbreds move to 12-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Brewers are now 6-17 with a 2-5 Liberty League mark.

Skidmore was paced by a match-best 17 kill effort from Katy Ehnstrom, who added a dig, an assist and two block assists. Zoe Beals and Sophia Hettler each recorded seven kills, while Hettler also added 10 digs. Alex Estey added four block assists with five kills and five digs, while Frida Anguiano had a match-high 16 digs. Lauren Wolters and Audrey Powell added 23 and 15 assists each.

For Vassar, Sara Ehnstrom paced the effort with 14 kills and 12 digs. Claire Basler-Chang added 10 kills and 10 digs with two service aces, while Jennifer Kerbs added nine kills with two block assists. Colette Cambey had six kills and three block assists, as Madison Wilson recorded a match-best 36 assists with four block assists and seven digs.

The opening set saw the two teams locked in a 24-all tie after kills from Kerbs and Basler-Chang helped even the score. Skidmore rebounded as Powell laid down a kill, followed by an error on Vassar to give the home team the first set advantage, 26-24.

Second set became a back-and-forth battle as an ace from Claire Bialek gave the Brewers a 10-9 advantage. Later on, a kill from Wilson pushed the score to 16-16 as Vassar continued to battle back into the match. Skidmore was able to rebound as Beals laid down a pair of kills to make it 21-19. The Thoroughbreds capped the frame with kills from Ehnstrom and Anguiano to post the 25-20 victory.

The squads made it another close one in the final set as kills from Ehnstrom and Basler-Chang pushed Vassar out to a 22-21 edge. The Brewers led by a 23-21 margin, but three kills from Skidmore's Ehnstrom saw the home team battle back for the win.

Vassar returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts New Paltz at 6pm. Skidmore plays on Friday at 8pm, hosting Plattsburgh State.
