POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College women's volleyball team came-from-behind - powered by double-figure kills from four players - to defeat SUNY New Paltz by a 3-2 margin on Wednesday at Kenyon Hall Gym. With the victory, the Brewers move to 7-17, while the Hawks are now 13-12.
Vassar found itself trailing by a 2-1 margin after the visiting Hawks posted a 25-22 set win in the third. Heading into the fourth, the Brewers built up a 6-3 lead behind kills from sophomore
Claire Basler-Chang and senior
Colette Cambey, but New Paltz battled back as several errors, a pair of kills from senior Maddie Van Pelt and two service aces from junior Caleigh Carr pushed them to a 13-6 edge.
New Paltz continued to maintain the lead until the 17-16 mark as three straight errors helped Vassar to an 18-17 lead. It continued to be a back-and-forth battle until the 22-all mark as Van Pelt and freshman Katie Steele laid down kills for a 24-22 edge. Sara Ehnstrom closed out the set with the 26-24 edge.
In the fifth and decisive set, New Paltz opened with a 4-2 lead following consecutive kills from sophomore Courtney Gebhardt, but the homestanding Brewers turned it around, taking an 8-5 lead behind a pair of kills from Cambey, along with a Kerbs strike.
Locked 9-9, the Hawks got a kill from Steele, but VC rebounded quickly for three straight points and a 12-10 edge. That set up a back-and-forth battle as the teams continued to trade points, tying five more times. Ehnstrom laid down a strong strike to make it 18-all, and an error on the Hawks, followed by an ace from freshman
Kasey Drake sealed the win for the Brewers.
Ehnstrom led the Brewers in scoring with 15 kills and an ace with 14 digs. Kerbs added 14 kills with three aces, a block solo, four block assists and six digs, while Cambey and Basler-Chang each laid down 11 kills. Cambey also had a block solo and three block assists, while Basler-Chang added 23 digs and two block assists. Wilson had 46 assists and added three blocks assists as well.
For New Paltz, Van Pelt led all players with 24 kills to go with an assist and 18 digs. Steele added 10 kills and a block assist, while junior Demi Harasme had nine kills. Senior Kerri Neville notched two block assists and seven kills, while junior Olivia D'Antonio and senior Nicole Fellone each had a match-best 24 digs.
Vassar returns to action on Saturday when it hosts its regular season finale at Kenyon Hall. The Brewers will take on Stevens (11am) and Lebanon Valley (4pm) in tri-match action, celebrating the teams seniors prior to the second match. New Paltz heads to the Skidmore Invitational this weekend, facing Union on Friday (5pm), followed by Morrisville State (12pm) and Skidmore (2pm) on Saturday.
