Women's Volleyball Wins Thriller Over Union

Brewers outlast Dutchwomen for a 3-2 league win

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 25, 2019) - Powered by a season-high 19 kills from sophomore Claire Basler-Chang, the Vassar College women's volleyball team came-from-behind to earn a 3-2 win over Union College in Liberty League action on Friday evening at Kenyon Hall. With the win, the Brewers are now 6-16 overall with a 2-4 mark in conference play, while the Dutchwomen are now 11-12 and 0-6 in the Liberty League.

Facing a 2-1 deficit heading into the third set, the Brewers made a powerful comeback with a 25-12 win in the fourth set. It was a tight set to begin with as neither team held more than a two-point advantage. Locked at 6-all, that changed as Vassar capitalized on numerous errors and a kill from senior Jennifer Kerbs to open an 11-6 lead.

Union got a kill from junior Katie Moss to close it to a 6-point deficit, but VC powered back once again, opening up a 17-9 edge following a Basler-Chang kill. That strike set off a 5-0 run for the Brewers for a 21-9 lead. The Dutchwomen were able to take advantage of a bad set from Vassar, but could not close the gap as the Brewers forced the fifth set.

The Dutchwomen jumped out to a 4-2 edge in the final frame, as junior Julia Louis laid down a kill. The visitors led by as many as 8-5 until a kill from Kerbs and a timely error closed the gap to 8-7. Vassar trailed by 12-10, but back-to-back kills from Basler-Chang tied it all up at 12.

Union once again took a lead as junior Lara Atalay pushed the visitors out to 15-14, but a 3-0 run with kills from Wilson and Basler-Chang, along with a service ace from sophomore Sara Ehnstrom sealed the set and match win.

Basler-Chang also added seven digs and two assists on the evening. Senior Colette Cambey posted nine kills with three block assists, while Kerbs had eight kills. Wilson recorded 39 assists with nine digs, two kills and a block assist as sophomore Claire Bialek recorded a game-best 25 digs.

For Union, Louis and Atalay each notched 13 kills with Ataley adding a match-best four service aces and 11 digs. Juniors Katie Moss and Gillian Gore each had 12 kills with Gore posting a match-high 25 digs, while junior Sage Shimamoto had a match-best 49 assists.

Vassar returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Skidmore for a 4pm Liberty League contest. Union is also in action tomorrow, hosting Bard for Senior Day at 4pm.
