ANNANDALE-on-HUDSON, NY - (October 16, 2019) - Powered by a 16-kill effort from sophomore
Claire Basler-Chang, the Vassar women's volleyball team powered its way to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-17) victory at Bard in Liberty League action on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Brewers move to 5-16 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while Bard slips to 6-14 and 0-5 in the Liberty League.
In addition to her match-high 16 kills, Basler-Chang also added two digs, two service aces and three block assists. Senior
Colette Cambey notched eight kills on the evening, adding a match-best four block assists with five digs. Sophomore
Sara Ehnstrom recorded six kills with 10 digs, while classmate
Claire Bialek added a team-high 13 digs. Earning a match-best 32 assists was sophomore
Madison Wilson, who also posted three kills, a service ace and 11 digs.
For Bard, Macey Spearko notched seven kills with five digs. Mikala L'Hote and Maracela Talamantes each added six kills, with Talamantes notching 12 digs, while Emily Anastasi recorded a match-best 17 digs. Jewel Smith had 21 assists with a service ace and seven digs.
It was a tight battle to start the match and the homestanding Raptors grabbed a 12-11 advantage on a bad set, but the Brewers came roaring back with a 5-0 run and kills from Basler-Chang, Ehnstrom and Wilson to build up a 16-12 lead. Back-to-back kills from L'Hote pulled the deficit to 19-16, but a 6-1 run quickly followed with consecutive kills from Basler-Chang at the end for the 25-17 set win.
Vassar jumped out quick in the second frame, earning an 11-5 lead on a strike by Ehnstrom, but Bard responded with four straight points to narrow the gap to 11-9. The Brewers bounced back and used a 5-0 run, which included kills from Basler-Chang and senior
Jennifer Kerbs to make it a 17-10 score. VC continued to take advantage of Bard's errors down the stretch, closing the set out with another 6-1 run - with two kills from Cambey - for the 25-15 win.
Set three was close at the beginning, but Vassar began to pull away and owned a 14-9 advantage following an ace from Wilson. Lilian O'Donnell had a pair of kills for Bard, but Vassar continued to press as Basler-Chang posted four of the team's final nine points enroute to the 25-17 set win and 3-0 match victory.
Vassar returns to action on Friday, October 25th when it hosts Union College at 4pm in Kenyon Hall. Bard is back on the court on Friday at 7pm, traveling to Amherst, MA, for the Hall of Fame Invitational where it will first face Bates.
