POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 11, 2019) - Powered by 12 kills apiece from Camryn O'Leary and Reagan Stone, the Ithaca College volleyball team defeated Vassar College in Liberty League action on Friday evening. With the win, the Bombers improve to 12-5 and remain undefeated in conference action at 3-0. The Brewers slip to 4-15 overall with an 0-3 Liberty League mark.
O'Leary (Sugar Land, TX) added a block assist, while Stone (St. Louis, MO) had an assist, three digs and two block assists. Freshman defensive specialist Grace Isaksen (Glenville, NY) and sophomore libero Jordan Lyn Hayashi (Hilo, HI) each posted a match-best 17 digs, while senior setter Caitlyn Floyd (Mahwah, NJ) had a match-high 32 assists. Sophomore middle hitter Monet Peoples (Baltimore, MD) led all players with a block solo and three block assists.
For Vassar, sophomore hitter
Claire Basler-Chang (Amherst, MA) had eight kills with three digs and a service ace. Classmate and libero
Claire Bialek (Brookline, MA) had a team-best nine digs, while sophomore setter
Madison Wilson (Plano, TX) had 16 assist with six digs and a service ace. Senior hitter
Jennifer Kerbs (Sacramento, CA) had a match-best two service aces to go along with five kills, a dig, a block solo and a block assist.
Ithaca jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, but Vassar battled back as an ace from Basler-Chang cut the home team's deficit to 6-4. Another kill from Basler-Chang later made it 9-5, but a 4-0 run gave the Bombers a commanding 13-5 lead. Ithaca was paced by a kill and an ace from freshman middle hitter Jennifer Pitts (McMurray, PA) during the run. The Brewers capitalized later with three staight points to make it 16-15, but a 7-0 run helped seal a 25-17 set win in the first for Ithaca.
The Bombers owned a 14-9 lead in the second set, capitalizing on a eight-point swing to build up a 22-9 advantage. Peoples and junior outside hitter Sarah Jennison (Clinton, NJ) each notched a pair of kills during the run. Basler-Chang and senior hitter
Colette Cambey (Hillsborough, NC) each posted kills, but Ithaca continued to take advantage of VC errors to earn the 25-11 set victory.
A close dual in the third set saw the homestanding Brewers take a 7-5 advantage following a Wilson ace. That momentum was short-lived as a Peoples kill tied the match at 8-all. Three points followed for the visitors as Ithaca gained an 11-8 lead, but a pair of errors once again pulled Vassar back to within one (11-10). Ithaca added to their advantage and went on a 6-0 run with three kills from O'Leary for a 19-11 edge. Basler-Chang added a pair of kills for Vassar, but the Bombers were solid down the stretch for the set win and match victory.
Vassar and Ithaca both return to the court for league action on Saturday at 2pm as the Brewers host RIT, while the Bombers head to Bard.
