Women's Volleyball Falls to RIT

Ehnstrom paces Brewers with 10 kills in league loss

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 12, 2019) - Two players reached double figures in leading the Rochester Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (31-29, 25-13, 25-15) victory over Vassar College in Liberty League action on Saturday. With the win, the Tigers' seventh straight of the season, RIT improves to 13-8 and is now 3-1 in league play. The Brewers slip to 4-16 and 0-4 in the Liberty League.

Senior middle blocker Kelly Waters (Burnt Hills, NY) notched a match-best 16 kills, adding two block assists, while sophomore Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY) notched 13 kills with two assists, 13 digs and two block assists to pace the Tigers. Junior setter Brianna Ellis (Wayne, PA) recorded a match-high 43 assists, while senior libero Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY) had 15 digs to lead all players.

For Vassar, sophomore setter Sara Ehnstrom (Kaneohe, HI) led the way with 10 kills. She also had three assists and three digs. Sophomore hitter Claire Basler-Chang (Amherst, MA) added eight kills with 12 digs, while classmate and setter Madison Wilson (Plano, TX) added 27 assists with four digs. Senior hitter Jennifer Kerbs (Sacramento, CA) laid down four kills with a block solo and two block assists, while sophomore middle blocker Jamie Kesten (Los Altos, CA) added five kills and two block assists.

It was a wild opening set as Vassar opened with a 5-1 lead behind a number of Tigers errors. A pair of kills from junior outside hitter Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ) helped pull RIT to within two (7-5) and the Tigers later tied after back-to-back strikes from Waters for the 11-all score.

Vassar owned a 23-20 lead nearing the end of the set, but the visiting Tigers powered back in as a kill from Hobler and errors from the Brewers tied the match once again at 23-all. It was a back-and-forth affair from that point as the two teams tied six times. Locked at 29-29 following a kill from Marston, RIT took advantage of a VC error and a kill from Higgins to take the set.

In the second frame, RIT opened with a 9-1 advantage as three kills from Waters and two from Hobler helped to push the margin. A kill from Cambey later closed the gap to 20-11, but the Brewers were plagued by errors. Kill from senior middle blocker Shelby Doheny (Moreau, NY), Ellis and Higgins closed out the set win for the Tigers.

The final set saw the Brewers battle back from a 6-3 deficit to take a 7-6 lead on a number of RIT errors. Despite the momentum, the Tigers came roaring back, leading 13-9. A 6-0 run further added to the advantage and the visitors remained solid down the stretch for the win.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday as Vassar travels to Bard for a 7pm match. RIT heads to the University of Rochester for a 6pm tilt.
