Newport News, VA – Facing one of the toughest teams in the country, the Vassar field hockey team held their own against No. 6 Christopher Newport, but was edged by a second half goal in a 2-1 loss.
The Brewers (2-1) controlled the first half, holding a 9-1 shot advantage, but the Captains capitalized on their solo attempt. Courtney Fiest position herself on top of the circle and ripped the shot through the Vassar defense and into the net to take to 1-0 lead. Even with controlling the pace of the game, the Brewers were unable to score in the first.
Midway through the second, the pace evened up with each team taking six shots. Fifteen minutes in,
Mikayla Young (Honesdale, PA) lined up for the corner and found
Molly Youse (New Cumberland, PA) to tie the game 1-1. The break did not last long when less than two minutes later Lily Bryngelson picked up Ariana Samuel for the Captains' second goal.
A late comeback was attempted by Vassar, but time was not on the Brewers side.
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) started in goal for Vassar and recorded two saves, while Olivia Davis picked up eight for Christopher Newport.
Vassar returns to action tomorrow against Washington & Lee at 1 p.m.
