Newport News, VA – Vassar field hockey flipped the script today, rebounding from a tough loss to Christopher Newport on Friday with a dominant victory over Washington & Lee on Saturday afternoon. Four Brewers scored, while the defense recorded its second shutout of the season.
Vassar (4-1) controlled an 11-1 shot advantage in the first, but it was not until the 29
th minute that the Generals' defense broke.
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY) passed through six defenders to the top of the circle where
Cristina Lopez (Timonium, MD) was waiting. The junior launched the shot into net to take the 1-0 lead.
The Brewers kept the pressure going after halftime, outshooting Washington & Lee (1-2) 16-4.
Emily Poehlein (Northampton, MA) then struck two minutes in after
Mikayla Young (Honesdale, PA) picked her up off a penalty corner. Not even a minute later,
Alyssa More (Wilmington, DE) swept in a pass from Caveny for her first goal of the game.
After helping two of her teammates find net, Caveny decided to get in on the action by tipping a More pass high and past the Generals' goalkeeper to secure a 4-0 Vassar win.
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) started in goal for Vassar, making one save and recording her first shutout of the season.
Vassar fans have to wait just a little longer for the next Brewers' home game, with the team on the road for the next two games. First up is Western Connecticut State on Sept. 12 and then Ramapo on Sept. 15.
